Summary

English Official Summary

Our heroes arrive at Hutber Port, where a ferryboat line runs to the mainland. There they meet a cousin of the old man's competitor from Acapulco who, having recently acquired a great deal of money, is trying to construct a huge luxury hotel, turning a coral reef area into a tremendous resort. This section of coral reef, however, is very important to the Tentacool and Horsea that live there. When a huge school of Tentacool interferes with the construction of the hotel, the cousin and a group of young people organize a campaign to drive them away, offering a reward of $10,000 to anyone who can repel the Tentacool. Naturally this draws the attention of Team Rocket who attempt to get rid of the Tentacool by spreading a mixture of super secret stun sauce over the ocean. Their plan backfires, however, transforming the Tentacool into a gigantic Tentacruel which begins a fierce counterattack against the humans. In order to defeat this reign of terror, Ash, Misty, Brock and their Pokémon are drawn into a battle that will require more than just strong combative skill.

Script Error

"Porta Vista" is the English dub name for Aopulco, but in episode 19, it became the dub name for Hatoba because they were trying to pretend there never WAS an Aopulco.

When the English dub finally went back and aired "Beauty and the Beach" on June 24th, 2000, almost 2 years after episode 17 aired, they had to name THAT Porta Vista as well. In the English dub, episode 18 and 19 take place in the same resort.

Narrator (EP 17 English Dub): ...and arrive at the beautiful town of Porta Vista!
Narrator (EP 18 English Dub): Now our heroes have arrived at the beautiful resort island of Porta Vista...
Narrator (EP 19 English Dub): We find our heroes stranded at Porta Vista,

Culture Reference

The 20th episode of Pokémon Get TV skipped the airing of Menokurage and Dokukurage. Pokémon Get TV had been airing the Anime series in order from the beginning until the 19th episode of the series but was replaced by The Rocket Gang's Romantic and Youthful Origin.

Due to the situation at the time in Japan in regards to large amounts of squid being caught by fisherman and washing up ashore, the initially planned broadcast of "Menokurage and Dokukurage" was changed.

A notice on TV Tokyo's website stated: "* Due to the current situation, the initially planned broadcast of "Menokurage and Dokukurage" has been changed." (※当初予定しておりました「メノクラゲドククラゲ」の放送は、都合により、放送内容を変更いたします。)

Script Error

The Japanese original referred to the jellyfish Pokémon Tentacool and Tentacruel as just "jellyfish" (くらげ) countless times throughout this episode but the English dub almost exclusively used "Tentacool".

Only references to 'Jellyfish' in the English dub:
Dexter @ 6:17: Tentacool, a jellyfish Pokémon.
Jessie @ 9:55: Just for getting rid of some jellyfish.
Dexter @ 11:27: Tentacruel, a jellyfish Pokémon.
Nastina @ 18:08: Come on, you big jellyfish, I'll show you--oww!
Ash @ 19:40: So, Misty, you still think jellyfish Pokémon are cute?
03:32

Paint Edit

The man that Misty rescues with her Pokémon responds differently. In the Japanese version, he can barely tell Satoshi and friends that he's been paralyzed but in the English version he's more concerned about the situation rather than his health.

Man (Eng Dub): It's terrible, terrible!
Man (JPN): I'm p... p... paralyzed.
04:07

Paint Edit

The kanji for Beauty (美) is on the fans that the guys are waving in the Japanese version. In the English dub, the fans have yellow circle over the kanji instead.
04:07

Script Error

In both the English and Japanese version, the boss Nastina (おばば) is grateful to Ash and his friends for rescuing her workers. Ash's response though is radically different to mask the fact that the previous episode had not aired in the English at that time. Satoshi believe's that the boss is Obaba who they met in Aopulco but Hatoba Obaba explains that she is her cousin.

English Dub:
Ash: You're very welcome.
Ash: I wonder if you could give us a ride to the mainland.
Nastina: Hmm, you don't think you're gonna get away that fast, do ya?
Nastina: Not until you see my new resort.
Ash: Resort?

Japanese Version:
Satoshi: Um, didn't we meet in Aopulco?
Obaba: Don't associate me with that miser, baba!
Obaba: I'm her cousin, baba!
Satoshi: Her cousin?
04:50

Script Error

Once again, a reference to Aopulco is removed from the English dub. Obaba explains that the tourists are going to Aopulco because the Menokurage are halting the progress on the construction of her resort.

Nastina: All the tourists have been staying away from here.
Obaba: It's because of them that the tourists are all flowing into Aopulco.
05:31

Script Error

The English dub keeps the 'million' in the episode like the Japanese version did but a million dollars in United States Dollars (USD) is significantly more money than a million yen.

Obaba: Also, a cash prize of 1,000,000 yen.
Nastina: One million dollars in cash...
05:40

Script Error

Obaba in the Japanese original asks Satoshi in his friends if they would prefer the money to the goods but in the English dub she just tells them that she would pay them the reward only after they exterminated the Tentacool.

Misty in the dub just thinks the idea is 'disgusting' but Kasumi in the Japanese original outright tells Obaba that she and her friends refuse to help her.

English Dub:
Nastina: First you have to exterminate the Tentacool. Every last one.
Nastina: Then I'll pay you the reward.
Misty: That's disgusting!

Japanese Version:
Obaba: But you have to exterminate the jellyfish. Come on, what will you do?
Obaba: Would you prefer the money to the goods, baba?
Kasumi: We refuse!
06:23

Paint Edit

A sign on a building labeled "Seaside" (シーサイド) is partially blocked by Kasumi's head in both the English and Japanese versions.
09:00

Script Error

Obaba appears out of her tank just after Rocket Gang finishes their motto. In the Japanese version, Rocket Gang recognizes her and believes that she is Aopulco Obaba just like Satoshi and his friends though she was. Satoshi mutters that Obaba should exterminate Rocket Gang and just as Kojiro suggest she is Aopulco Obaba, Hatoba Obaba shoots at them. The English dub once again removes the Aopulco references and Nastina shoots at Team Rocket in the dub because they made fun of her hair.

Nyarth explains that Obaba is their sponsor for the eliminating Menokurage but Meowth makes a joke in the English dub that her hair 'stinks'. Kojiro refers to the 'Menokurage' as jellyfish but James specifically calls them Tentacool.

Character Japanese Original English Dub
Nastina Oh, they seem reliable. Hey, they got a lot of spunk.
Ash Go exterminate them. That's a new definition of spunk.
Jessie Oh, you're from... Look at that hair.
James ...Aopulco...? Disaster.
Nastina I'm her talented cousin! I don't need your beauty tips.
Nastina Mistake me for her, and you'll get shot! I need to get rid of Tentacool.
Jessie Cousin or cuttle, you're already shooting so what does it matter?! It's a very distinctive style, just don't shoot.
Meowth She's our sponsor. You mean di-stink-tive.
Jessie How rude of us. Oh, we are terribly sorry.
James Anyway, if you're requesting a jellyfish extermination, just say "baba" and leave it to us, the Rocket Gang. Yes, very sorry. Please, leave your little Tentacool extermination project to Team Rocket.
Nastina Oh, the odds are in your favor, baba. Heh heh, this crew might just pull it off.

09:44

Script Error

The English dub removed the joke that Musashi says in the Japanese version which is based on the fact that Obaba says "baba" all the time. She jokes that she is "Ali Baba" as a way of telling Obaba that she is "skilled" enough to be up to the task of eliminating the Menokurage.

Jessie: We sure will Nastina!
Musashi: I'm Ali Baba!
(ムサシ): アリババだ~!
09:52

Paint Edit

The kanji for Beauty (美) is on the fans that the guys are waving in the Japanese version. In the English dub, the fans have yellow circle over the kanji instead.
10:19

Script Error

The kanji on the barrel labeled 'Economical' (徳用) in the Japanese version is replaced with a picture of a Tentacool in the English dub.

Rocket Gang states at the same time that it's "sanbaizu", literally "three-cup vinegar", vinaigrette made from vinegar, soy and mirin rice wine as a sweetener to make a sweet, sour and bitter taste. Team Rocket on the other hand says its a super secret sauce.

Team Rocket: Super secret stun sauce!
Rocket Gang: ...economical sanbaizu!
10:21

Script Error

Jessie did not state what affect spreading the sauce on the Tentacool would have in the English dub, a critical error as its intended effect is never explained in the dub. In the Japanese version, Musashi states the jellyfish would get dizzy, making them easier to catch.

Jessie: We'll just pour it into the ocean, all over the Tentacool.
Musashi: If we spread this around the sea, the Menokurage will get dizzy.
10:28

Paint Edit

In the Rocket Gang fantasy in the Japanese version, Kojiro has a stand with a few signs that state "Jellyfish" (くらげ) and "pickled" (すのもの). The English version painted the signs over and replaced it with the "R" from Team Rocket and "TENTACOOL".
10:30

Paint Edit

Jessie's earring is painted out and replaced with a Tentacool picture on the sign at James stand.
10:50

Script Error

Jessie states in the English dub that they don't have enough sauce to cover all the Tentacool but in the original Japanese version, Musashi is just thinking about the reward money.

Kojiro's guess about how many Tentacool there are is 100 times greater than James' guess and falls in line with Musashi's previous line about the million yen reward.

Character Japanese Original English Dub
Meowth Hey, scatter the sanbaizu! Dump the stun sauce, dump the stun sauce!
Jessie Ah, that's right. 1,000,000 yen. Oh, we don't have enough of it.
James We're facing 1,000,000 jellyfish. There must be 10,000 of them.

11:15

Script Error

Musashi states that the Dokukurage increased from triple to 30 times its expected size. The triple refers to the fact that "triple" and "three-cup" are both pronounced "sanbai" in Japanese. She says 'sanbai' (triple) because the vinaigrette was 'sanbai' (three-cup).

The English dub continued its McDonalds references with Jessie's line stating that their 'secret sauce' 'super sized' the Tentacruel.

Jessie: Aah! We super sized it!
Musashi: No! This isn't triple, this is thirty times its original size!
11:44

Script Error

In the Japanese original, Takeshi uses the Metric system and specifically states 2 metres (二メートル) but Brock in the English dub uses the Imperial system and states 7 feet. 2 meters = approximately 6.56 feet, so rounding up to 7 feet makes sense.

Brock: Even at its greatest height, a Tentacruel shouldn't be more than 7 feet tall.
Takeshi: No matter how big a Dokukurage is, it shouldn't even reach two meters.
12:30

Script Error

Kojiro in the Japanese version wonders where Nyarth ended up as he's not with them on the pole whereas James in the English dub has no concern for Meowth though Musushi replied that she had no concern for Nyarth and only for herself. Jessie says they should be safe to climb down but Musashi asks Kojiro how they were going to get down.

Character Japanese Original English Dub
Jessie W-We came back, somehow. Oh, thank badness we survived.
James Huh? Where's Nyarth? We're high and dry.
Jessie I care about myself more than Nyarth. It's a good thing we grabbed onto this pole.
Jessie How do we get down from here? It should be safe to climb down now.
Rockets Too high! Uh, help!

17:40

Script Error

Nastina lines are altered a bit in the English dub during the scene when she faces Tentacruel.

Character Japanese Original English Dub
Nastina Why you... you're nothing but a jellyfish! You think you can get away that easy, do ya?
Nastina You're reimbursing me, baba! Take this!
Nastina That's good, baba. Now that it's come to this, I'll capture you. I'll capture ya, throw ya in a tank and charge admission.
Nastina I'm going to make some money! Eat lead, squidly!

19:30

Paint Edit

The big sign states: Beach House Ryuu (海の家リュウ), while the sign on the door says 'Closed' (閉域) in the Japanese version. Both signs were painted out in the English version.
19:47

Paint Edit

Obaba (Hatoba) is sent flying all the way to Aopulco where she lands on the building her cousin Obaba (Aopulco) is constructing. The English dub removes the reference to Aopulco again and the fact that Obaba (Hatoba) is a bit surprised to see that her cousin is alive still.

Brutella: You shouldn't drop in on me like this.
Nastina: I thought that's what cousins are for.
Obaba (Aopulco): Long time no see, Hatoba's.
Obaba (Hatoba): You're still alive, Aopulco's?

The English dub significantly changed this episode quite a bit to remove the fact that they skipped the previous episode for a few years. Overall I thought this was a decent episode in Japanese.

Summary:
Satoshi and friends have arrived at Hatoba Port, which the ferry back to the mainland will depart from. There, they run into Obaba, cousin of the Obaba from Aopulco.

This Obaba is a newly rich upstart who plans to create a massive resort by building a huge luxury hotel into the coral reef in the beautiful bay. However, this reef area is very precious to the sea Pokémon like Tattu and Menokurage.

Huge amounts of Menokurage are getting in the way of Obaba's hotel construction, so Obaba and her speedo boys organize and anti-Menokurage campaign: The person who succeeds in getting rid of all the Menokurag will be awarded a prize of one million yen. Naturally, Musashi and Kojiro of the Rocket Gang get in on this. However, the triple-flavor vinaigrette the Rocket Gang dump into the sea to get rid of the Menokurage ends up having the opposite effect, turning one of the Menokurage into a gigantic Dokukurage. And now this giant Dokukurage starts its revenge against the humans.
