Misty is a Gym Leader in the Kanto region, specifically Cerulean City, and specializes in the Water type. She is known as "The Tomboyish Mermaid".
Main series games
In the Generation 1 games and it's remakes, Misty is the second Gym Leader of the Kanto region that new trainers and the player (
Red,
Leaf,
Chase, or
Elaine) face. She claims her strategy in battle is an "all-out offensive with Water-type Pokémon". An avid swimmer, she always is looking to train and improve, so she does so at the Seafoam Islands, being inspired by the Elite Four member Lorelei. She also claims to want to find love at the Cerulean Cape.
In the Generation 2 games and its remakes, three years later, Misty is at first not in her Gym, but is later found by the player (
Ethan,
Kris, or
Lyra), having a date with her supposed boyfriend at the Cerulean Cape, but the boyfriend is scared away at the sight of prying eyes. She gets angry at the player, but they can challenge her after anyways. She recognizes your strength after you beat her, but doesn't forgive you what happened.
In Black 2 and White 2, Misty traveled to Unova to participate in the Pokémon World Tournament, where she could face the player (
Nate or
Rosa) with a full team of six.
Pokémon the Series
Misty, the Gym Leader of the Cerulean City Gym, was first seen fishing on a riverbank near Pallet Town. Thinking she had a big catch, she reeled in
Ash Ketchum and
Ash's Pikachu, who had jumped in the river to escape a flock of wild Spearow. Misty suggested that
Ash Ketchum take
Ash's Pikachu to the nearest Pokémon Center and pointed them in the right direction. In a hurry,
Ash Ketchum jumped on Misty's bicycle so that he could quickly get
Ash's Pikachu to the Pokémon Center. He promised one day to the return bike. Misty eventually follows
Ash Ketchum to Viridian City, carrying her bike that was destroyed by Pikachu's Thundershock while battling the flock of Spearow. Since that point, she had been traveling with Ash through the Kanto, Orange Islands, and Johto regions, before leaving back to the Cerulean Gym to take care of it. There, she would often meet up with traveling companion Tracey, as well as accomplish things such as conquer her fear of Gyarados. She later would meet Ash in Hoenn, where she would depart with her now evolved Togetic so it could protect the Togepi Mirage, and then again when Ash and his Alolan classmates had a fieldtrip to the Pewter Gym, and vice versa when she and Brock went to Alola as a vacation. She also met Goh when he went on his own journey.
Several dislikes of Misty's have been revealed over time which include carrots, peppers, and most famously bugs. However,
Misty has warmed up to a few cuter bug Pokémon which were
Ash's Butterfree and Heracross along with
Tracey's Scyther. Despite being known as a tomboy she does have girlish tendencies and likes romance along with French things.
Misty is also said to have a crush on
Ash Ketchum but its largely added in English with a few hints given in Japanese as well along with Rudy, Danny, and Georgio expressing romantic feelings toward
Misty at one time or another. She also once
Misty recalled that when she was young she was known as "Kasumi the Tambourinist" (タンバリン使いのカスミ) but her playing skills didn't seem to be too good as
Olesia's Wooper closed their ears and it wasn't until
Misty's Togepi started playing it that they responded normally to the tambourine.
Misty thought she was decent at playing and she couldn't figure out what she was doing wrong.
One of her quirks is a tendency to be quick tempered but she also has a compassionate and caring side as shown with Togepi along with others met on her journey with
Ash Ketchum. Even with
Ash Ketchum and
Brock Misty has acted as the voice of reason from time to time and pulled
Brock away by the ear to keep him from getting into trouble with a random Nurse Joy, Officer Jenny or anyone else he became infatuated with.
Misty is a very devoted water Pokemon trainer and has a number of achievements including top 8 in the Whirl Cup, winner of the Seaking Catching Contest, and winner of the Celedon City Princess Festival, however she feels put down by her more beautiful and popular triplet sisters, Daisy, Violet, and Lily.
According to a
listing on Turner Classic Movie's website, 4Kids had given her the last name
Williams, but it never went spoken.
