Culture Reference

The Japanese version makes it very clear that there is a distinction between 'Psychic' and 'psionic' in this episode. If people read "Psychic Pokémon", they'll think "Pokémon of the type "Psychic", and that's not what the script calls for. For instance, psionics (超能力 chounouryoku) is the ability to use telepathy and telekinesis where as the actual Pokémon type itself is called Esper (エスパー) in Japanese.
01:50

Script Error

Ash in the dub version is concerned about getting out of the forest while Satoshi in the Japanese original is mad that he has to camp out (野宿 nojuku) again.

Ash: Now we'll never get outta here!
Satoshi: At this rate, we'll have to camp out again.
01:50

Script Error

Moments after Satoshi says he doesn't want to camp out, Kasumi brings up the point that Satoshi was the one that suggested this route was a shortcut. Satoshi then defends himself saying that he didn't make the suggestion.

In the English dub, Misty just complains and makes fun of Ash instead by saying he'd get lost looking for himself in a mirror. Ash then tells Misty she cracks mirrors implying that she is ugly.

Character English Translation
Misty As if! Your sense of direction's so bad, you can't find yourself in a mirror! What? Aren't you the one who said this was a shortcut?
Ash You crack mirrors! I did not!
Misty You big baby! Yes, you did!

02:00

Script Error

Takeshi in the Japanese version wants to know if Satoshi did indeed suggest the shortcut but Brock in the English dub is getting fed up hearing Ash and Misty argue.

Brock: It's bad enough we're lost. If I've gotta listen to your arguing--
Takeshi: All right, I get it. Tell it to me straight, did you or did you not say it?
02:18

Script Error

A line is added to the English dub as Ash is chasing after the girl in the forest. He wanted to ask her for directions out.

Ash: Wait! We need directions!
Satoshi: Hey, hold up!
03:13

Script Error

Brock in the English dub thinks they are being ambushed when the little fireworks go off in front of them. Takeshi in the Japanese original doesn't quite take it to that extreme and just wonders what's going on.

Brock: This must be some kind of ambush!
Takeshi: What? What's this about?
タケシ: 何だ?! 何よ何だ?!
03:15

Script Error

Satoshi in the Japanese original specifically states he'll get the Gold badge but Ash in the English dub tells Sabrina to look out instead.

Ash: Yes! Look out, Sabrina. Here I come!
Satoshi: All right! I'll get the Gold Badge!
サトシ: よし! ゴールドバッジゲットだぜ!
03:23

Script Error

In the Japanese original, the Rocket Gang greets Satoshi and friends by saying 'Congratulations' (おめでとう Omedetou) but Satoshi takes offense thinking they said he was 'special' or a simple-minded idiot (おめでたい omedetai).

Japanese Original
Rockets: It's a special day!
Satoshi: What? I might be a little slow, but I'm not so dumb that strangers call me "special"!

English Dub
Team Rocket: Congratulations, winners.
Ash: Why should we win something just for walking into town?
03:29

Paint Edit

The English dub changed the sign from 'Yamabuki City' to 'Saffron City'.
05:02

Paint Edit

As Rocket Gang is changing into their normal uniforms, a screen prompt says: Please wait a moment! (しばらくお待ちください) in the Japanese version. The English dub painted over the Japanese and replaced it with "PLEASE STAND BY".
05:05

Script Error

The English dub makes it seem like Team Rocket is hosting their own show on the video conferencing monitor. The Japanese version doesn't make this distinction.

Character English Translation
Rockets Hey, don't sit there ignoring us! Hey! Are you guys listening?
Misty Their show is pretty boring. We've heard it several times already!
Ash It'll get canceled pretty soon. Hurry up and finish it.

05:31

Script Error

In the English dub Meowth insults his Team Rocket members as being amateurish but Nyarth in the Japanese version offers a suggestion that they might have pressed the wrong button.

Meowth: That's what happens when you work with amateurs.
Nyarth: Are you sure you didn't just push the wrong button?
05:50

Script Error

Meowth offers to turn down the air conditioning after James says they are 'frozen' in the English dub but Nyarth in the Japanese original is just wondering what's happened to Musashi and Kojiro.

Character English Translation
James I'm f-f-frozen! Wh-What's happening...
Jessie S-s-so am I! ...to us?
Meowth You want me to turn down the air conditioning? What's wrong with you guys?

06:35

Script Error

Takeshi's butt is sore from hitting the ground and he wishes the little girl could have transported them a bit better after she saved them from Team Rocket. Brock in the English dub doesn't even bring up the little girl.

Brock: We should be okay as long as we don't have to win any more prizes.
Takeshi: If she's saving us, she could be just a bit more courteous.
08:23

Script Error

Satoshi in the Japanese original thinks the guy has a stomach ache but Ash in the English dub thinks he has a headache.

Ash: You look like you've got a headache.
Satoshi: Got a stomach ache?
サトシ: お腹でも痛いの?
15:06

Paint Edit

The word 'Crunch' (カキ) was painted out in the dub version.
16:33

Script Error

Ash in the English dub says a pun based on the bouncing ball coming towards them.

Ash: We're gonna have a ball.
Satoshi: What's she planning to do?

20:38

Script Error

In the Japanese original, Rocket Gang does their normal feeling bad line but it is replaced in the English dub with James making a joke instead.

James: Maybe we should call the psychic hotline.
Rockets: This feels bad.
ロケット団: いやなかんじ...
