Summary
Ash and his friends take a boat to Cinnabar Island. The first thing that Ash is going to do is challenge the gym leader. Gary comes up to them. A bunch of people are dive into the pool and get their pictures taken. Gary tells them that Cinnabar Island is a resort. He tells Ash that he has lots of badges and is now taking a vacation. Gary then tells Ash that Cinnabar Island doesn't even have a gym leader. Ash gets a bit worried but remains confident.

When they arrive at the island, Ash and co. sees a lot of tourists shopping and having a good time. So they decide to look around. A guy infront of them stops them and he tells Ash a riddle. Ash gets the riddle wrong but Misty gets the correct answer. Ash asks where Blaine's gym is and the guy tells them that his gym is right in front of their eyes. He points to a wrecked house. Then the guy gives them his card and he walks away.

Ash and co. decide to check the lab out but they find out that it's just a bunch of souvenier stands. Ash's stomach growls and so they head towards the Pokémon Center. Team Rocket is at one of the stands selling cookies. Nurse Joy tells Ash and his friends that they don't have any more space and so they leave. Ash sees a hotel nearby and so they go to check it out. Unfortunately, they don't have any rooms available either. They try a few more hotels but none of them have any space available. Ash smells some good food in one of the hotels and he decides to check it out. The banquet belongs to Gary. Gary teases Ash because he doesn't have food or a place to stay.

Jigglypuff comes out and Ash, Misty, and Brock run away knowing that Jigglypuff will sing. Jigglypuff sings and Gary and his fans fall asleep. Jigglypuff angrily gets out its marker and it draws on the peoples' faces. Luckily for Ash and co., they did not fall asleep. Brock reminds Ash about the card that the guy gave to him. On the card is another riddle. Misty solves it and they go to the guy's hotel. As a prize, the guy gives them free rooms and dinner.

A lot of Pokémon are exercising at the lab. Team Rocket flies above in their balloon. They throw bombs at the lab. The phone rings in the hotel. The guy answers it and hears that there's trouble. Team Rocket now has all of the Pokémon in their net. Ash sends out Pidgeotto and he tells Pikachu and Pidgeotto to stop Team Rocket. Pikachu uses Thunderbolt on them. James drops the net and they go blasting off again. The Pokémon cheer for Ash. The guy tells Ash a secret to where Blaine built his new gym.

Ash, Misty, and Brock are bathing in the hot springs. They try to solve the guy's new riddle. Togepi jumps onto the stoned Gyarados. A passageway opens and the fence that serves as Misty's privacy falls off. She takes one look at them and screams. Then they go down the passageway. Each step down it gets hotter by the minute. They come to a closed door. Ash reaches out for it and screams because the door is burning hot. Suddenly, the door opens by itself revealing a gym arena. The guy that they met before comes out and he takes off his wig. He tells them that he is really Blaine. The battle is a 3-on-3 match with Ash and Blaine.

Blaine sends out Ninetales. Ash looks up Ninetales in his Pokédex and then he sends out Squirtle. Ninetales uses Fire Spin and Squirtle uses Water Gun. The Fire Spin is more powerful and it causes Squirtle to faint. Ash chooses Charizard to be his next Pokémon. Blaine returns Ninetales and he sends out Rhydon. Charizard ignores Ash and starts to do whatever it wants to do. Rhydon uses Horn Drill but Charizard just flies out of the way and leaves the arena. This makes Rhydon the winner. Ash's next Pokémon is Pikachu. Rhydon starts out with Fury Attack, but Pikachu dodges it. Pikachu uses Thunderbolt but the attack does no damage to Rhydon. Ash tells Pikachu to use Thunderbolt on its horn. Pikachu shocks Rhydon's horn and Pikachu is declared the winner. Blaine tells Ash a bit about his last Pokémon. He calls out for Magmar and Magmar appears from the lava. Steam shoots out from Magmar's feet

Magmar uses Fire Punch but Pikachu dodges the attack. One of the punches does hurt Pikachu's cheek. Pikachu uses Thunderbolt but Magmar blocks it. More Fire Punches are aimed at Pikachu. Pikachu dodges them all but it begins to walk towards the edge of the gym floor. Beneath the floor is hot boiling lava. Blaine tells Magmar to use Fire Blast. Magmar shoots out a big blast of fire...

Summary:
In order to qualify for entry in the Pokémon League, Satoshi and his party sets out to sea on a ferry, heading towards Guren Island so Satoshi can try to get a Crimson Badge at the Guren Gym. The laboratory on the island conducts research on how to raise strong Pokémon, causing the island to become known as a mecca for Pokémon Trainers. Satoshi and friends believe this to be true, and their hearts pound with excitement as they approach the island.

Just then, Shigeru approaches them, dressed in an aloha shirt and looking like he's on vacation. In his usual tone, he tells them that Guren Island is a tourist center, and that there's no Gym there at all.
