Summary
Several months have passed since Ash left his hometown of Pallet on his Pokémon journey. After lots of adventures and discoveries, Ash and his friends find themselves somewhere in the mountains en route to Fuchsia City where Ash will challenge the Fuchsia City Gym leader. Ash is confident that when he gets there, he will get his next badge.

Brock tells his friends that the map says the Fuchsia Gym's on the other side of the mountains right in front of them. He then refers to the map and shows them that they are surrounded on all sides by mountains so they will have to traverse through them to get to Fuchsia City.

Team Rocket has stopped for lunch as Meowth decides to work out instead of eating his lunch. Just as they start to eat, a large explosion is heard in the distance which also shakes the ground. Team Rocket find that instead of eating their lunch, it is covered all over their body. Jessie and James are extremely mad that their lunch was spoiled and take off to find who was responsible.

Ash and his friends also hear the explosion and run down the path to see what was causing it. They soon come upon a convoy of trucks heading up a road towards a building that is under construction. Jessie and James also discover the construction site and they see that there is rock blasting. Moments later the road gives way and a bunch of trucks get into an accident.

Pikachu can hear something under the ground and a Diglett appears in front of Pikachu. Meowth sees the Diglett and Pikachu on the road. Ash, Misty and Brock run up to a construction worker that got out of his truck that was in the accident to see if he is alright. He exclaims that the Diglett are destroying everything. He points to the Diglett group that has appeared down the road. Misty calls them cute but the construction worker is quick to tell her that thanks to them, they can't finish building the dam.

Ash gets out his Pokedex to look up Diglett. The dex explains that the movement of the ground Pokémon Diglett can be easily detected by their tracks of upturned earth. Ash looks at the road and doesn't see any upturned dirt so he is a bit confused. The construction worker explains that they can't get supplies through because of Diglett wrecking the road and that they have created a special division for developing strategies to fight off the Diglett but has proved unsuccessful.

The construction worker then tells Ash and his friends that they are calling for any able Pokémon trainer who is traveling through the area that is willing to help them get rid of the Diglett will receive a reward of a 6-night, 7-day stay at the famous Giva Hot Springs Resort. Just as he finishes explaining that, Gary appears in his car with fanclub of girls.

Gary insults Ash for a bit before the construction worker had enough of their fooling around and tells them to get back to the business at hand of getting rid of the Diglett's. Gary is quick to tell him that he's on the job now and he won't have to worry about them for much longer. Jessie and James overhear the Construction Worker's rant that there would be a reward for those that got rid of the Diglett and they decide that they could use a little relaxation at the hot spring resort.

The Construction Worker holds a group meeting at the construction site stating that he greatly appreciate all the talented Pokémon trainers that have shown up to help them get rid of the Diglett. Team Rocket realize that there is a lot of trainers there and they have a lot of Pokémon. James gets out a calculator to figure out just how many Pokémon they would have but stops when he realizes they couldn't possibly defeat all those Pokémon with just Ekans and Koffing. Team Rocket realizes they need an alternate plan instead.

The Construction Worker continues his meeting telling the Pokémon trainers that greatest parasitic bug Pokémon of the century is Diglett. Gary quickly corrects him by saying that the term mole Pokémon would be more appropriate. Ash gets a bit mad at Gary for showing off. Suddenly the Diglett appear and wreck a parked bus.

Gary tries to send out his Pokémon but just as its about to appear, the Pokéball closes and it doesn't come out. A Diglett appears and brings the Pokéball back to Gary. Gary tries throwing another Pokéball to release his Pokémon but like the first time, it doesn't come out. All the Pokémon trainers throw their Pokéball's trying to see if their Pokémon would come out but none do. A pile of Pokéball's is now in front of all the trainers and the Diglett's reappear and return all the Pokéball's to their trainers.

Ash tries to send out his Squirtle but Pikachu quickly tries to stop him from doing so but it still gets thrown but Squirtle doesn't come out. Gary realizes that the Pokémon don't want to battle the Diglett for some reason which Pikachu confirms. The Construction worker is then seen playing 'Wack-a-Diglett' with a hammer with little success. Gary then comments to Ash that wacking them with a hammer won't work because Diglett can pull their heads in at 186,000,282 miles per second, the speed of light. Gary then decides that it was best for him to just continue his journey to become a Pokémon Master and drives off.

Night arrives and Ash, Misty and Brock rest in a hot spring nearby as they discuss why the Pokémon wouldn't come out of their Pokéballs. The Diglett appear at the hot spring and Ash and his friends chase after them. Jessie and James meanwhile are spending their time figuring out that they need to get a certain degree of experience points before they can successfully evolve their Ekans and Koffing. They begin to cry and their Pokémon begin to evolve.

Ash and his friends find out why the Diglett were attacking the contruction site. The area is the Diglett and Dugtrio's home and they work and live in the mountain range. They realize that if the dam is completed, the whole forest would be completely covered with water and nothing could live there. The construction worker cancels the dam building project just as Team Rocket appears. They reveal that Jessie's Ekans evolved into an Arbok and that James's Koffing evolved into a Weezing. They attack but are quickly stopped by Ash and friends. Now that the Diglett and Dugtrio situation is resolved, Ash and his friends continue their journey to Fuchsia City.

Misty comments they have traveled a long way while Kasumi in the Japanese original infers that she glad to get out of Gringy City (グンジョシティ) as it was heavily polluted but doesn't specifically name it in this episode.

Misty: We sure have traveled a long way.
Kasumi: We finally got out of the city...

01:57

Script Error

Brock in the English dub has a funny way of admitting they are lost by not directly saying they are lost. Takeshi in the Japanese original on the other hand is a bit reluctant to admit that they are lost.

Brock: Okay, I won't tell you.
Takeshi: Eh... You... You could say that.

The food that Team Rocket is eating is changed in the English dub. In the Japanese original, Musashi was eating curry which the English dub changed to Chinese food and Kojiro's ochazuke (rice and tea) became tea and crumpets which he was eating with chopstick in a bowl. Generally don't see people eating tea and crumpets during Afternoon tea with chopstick and a bowl. Musushi's line also had a small rhyming pun "karei ni karee" (華麗にカレー).

Character English Translation Japanese
Jessie I'm having some lovely Chinese food. My lunch will be curry, cooked in a hurry.
James It's tea and crumpets for me. I'm raising you one with my rice and tea.
Meowth Nothin' for meowth. I'm gettin' a gut. I'm skipping this meal, I'm on a diet.
Rockets Work that body. I see. Good luck with that. Well then...

02:40

Script Error

Team Rocket's dialog was changed right after the blast as well. Musashi comments that her curry is sweet and Kojiro says he's covered in tea after the bowl filled with ochazuke spilled over him.

Kojiro's line: "You got that tea served right" is a pun in the Japanese original. Kojiro says: "Kotchi mo cha-mamire" and Nyarth replies: "Chamamiro" (チャマミロ). "Chamamiro" is a pun on "zamamiro" (様見ろ) which essentially means "serves you right".

Character English Translation Japanese
Jessie I didn't, mmm, get a taste. The curry's kinda sweet.
James I didn't get a sip. And I'm covered in tea.
Meowth That's the breaks, but I wonder where that big blast came from? You got that tea served right. But what was that just now?

03:00

Script Error

The next Team Rocket scene was pretty much rewritten from scratch compared to the Japanese original. First, Kojiro's line is a pun based on the fact that most of the words in his sentence have 'cha' (チャ) in it, in which he also references ochazuke (茶漬け) (rice and tea) again. In the English dub, James is still holding the bowl with chopsticks in it and then says he's not going to have his tea party?! That would be a strange tea party with chopsticks and bowls.

Next, some of the Rocket Gang's dialog was removed in the English dub. In the Japanaese original, Rocket Gang initially say "harisen" (ハリセン) which is a paper fan used as a slapstick but quickly correct themselves and say "yurusen" (許せん) which means "We won't forgive this!" as they are mad at whoever wrecked their lunch.

Finally, Kojiro thinks they are filming a documentary on buried treasure and then decides its Ultra Sentai (ウルトラ戦隊) instead. "Ultra sentai" is probably a combination of the "Super Sentai" and "Ultraman" which are very popular television shows in Japan. James things they are being attacked by aliens from another planet in the English dub.

Character English Translation Japanese
Musashi My lunch break is ruined. We worked so hard for lunch time!
Kojiro No tea party for me. My advice is to not dice my rice; it is absolutely not nice!
Rockets Someone's gonna pay for this! This is not punny!
Rockets *No dialog in English dub* No, I mean...
Rockets This is not funny!
Nyarth Hey, wait for me! I don't get it.
Musashi This place looks like a battle zone. Is this the beginning of a war?
Kojiro Maybe we're being attacked by aliens from another planet. A documentary on buried treasure? Or maybe Ultra Sentai?
Musashi What planet are you from? You're in a different world!

03:45

Script Error

In the Japanese original, the "different world" line is a running gag repeating many times throughout the episode which started off with Musashi telling Kojiro he was in a 'different world'. There doesn't seem to be much of a point to this line in the Japanese original other than "repetition = humor".

Character English Translation Japanese
Jessie Oh, the destruction. This is different!
James And we didn't cause it. The world is too different!

05:02

Script Error

Kasumi specifically states in the Japanese original that the road cracks look like the surface of a rice cracker Misty says is looked like a mini-earthquake.

Misty: It looks like a mini-earthquake.
Kasumi: It's like the surface of a rice cracker.

05:08

Script Error

The name of the dam in the Japanese original was the "Oats Go Dam" (オーツゴーダム). The English dub changed that to the "Great Giva Dam". "Giva Dam" also sounds like "Give a Damn", a common saying in English when people "don't care' about something.

Foreman: And it looks like we'll never be able to accomplish our dream of building the Great Giva Dam here in these mountains.
Foreman Translation: At this rate, we'll never have a cracker of a chance at completing our dream project; the Oats Go Dam, the finest dam of the mountain range!

05:46

Script Error

The name of the resort spring was changed in the English dub as was the rewards duration there. In the Japanese original, the resort spring is called the "Oats Go Hot Spring" (オーツゴー温泉) while its called the famous "Giva Hot Springs Resort" in the English dub. In the Japanese original, the duration for the reward at the resort was 4 days and 3 nights but the English dub changed that to 7 days and 6 nights.

Foreman: The reward is a 6-night, 7-day stay at the famous Giva Hot Springs Resort.
Foreman Translation: We offer a complimentary stay at the Oats Go Hot Spring for 4 days and 3 nights as a reward.

05:47

Paint Edit

The English dub painted out "Oats!! Go!" ゴー!) that was on the paper in the Japanese original. It's odd the English dub didn't add something on the paper as the Construction foreman shows Ash a blank piece of paper.
06:07

Paint Edit

The sign on the first bus in the Japanese original which says "Pokémon Trainer Party" (ポケモントレーナー御一行様) is painted out in the English dub.
06:37

Script Error

Shigeru asks Satoshi a question in the Japanese original about who was the fourth to leave Masara Town the first day of their journey and Satoshi responds that it was him. The English dub changes it so that Gary doesn't ask a question and adds the point about being dead last instead. Ash's response was also cut from the English dub.

Continuing the 'fourth' dialog, Shigeru says being fourth is cool but Satoshi isn't cool because they're in the world of Pokémon and they aren't playing basebase. The English dub removed the fourth reference here and Gary just says he's going to hit a grand slam. The fourth person in the batting order is generally the most important as it 'is known as the cleanup hitter, and is almost always one of the best hitters on the team, often the one with the most power.'

Kasumi then agrees with Shigeru's assessment of Satoshi. Takeshi then comments on Shigeru's earlier comments by saying the Pokémon world and the baseball world are 'different worlds' bring up that running gag again. Brock and Misty both agree that Gary is detestable.

Character English Translation Japanese
Gary You're the fourth to leave home but as a trainer, you're dead last. Whose sorry butt was the fourth one to leave on the same day we started our journeys?
Ash *Ash doesn't say anything in English dub. Just moans 'Aww' * That would be me.
Gary Now watch as I step up to the plate and hit a Pokémon grand slam! Being fourth is cool in baseball but this is the world of Pokémon.
Misty He's very... That's right.
Brock Detestable. They're different worlds.

07:30

Script Error

Takeshi asks the girls if they could meet up in eight years and the girls all turn him down because they think he is too old. In the English dub, Brock also asks the girls to meet up but instead they agree to his proposition but call him 'sir'. That is completely opposite to the Japanese original. Kasumi realizes Takeshi is getting old but he's not as old as Shigeru's girls imply. Once again, this is a sexual reference as 8 years later the girls would be 18 years old. Wikipedia states: "The national age of consent in Japan is 13 as specified by the Japanese Penal Code Articles 176 and 177. However, prefectures can have ordinances that prohibit sexual activities with any minor under 18." That is the only reason Takeshi would reference "8 years" as there was no reason he couldn't just ask them out on a date.

At the end of the scene, Brock asks the girls for their phone number, address or e-mail while Takeshi asks them for their phone numbers, pager numbers or postal numbers.

Character English Translation Japanese
Brock How would you lovely young ladies like to get together with me some time? Ladies, if it's all right with you, let's meet up in eight years?
Gary's Girls Yes, sir, that would be fun. Noooo, Pops.
Brock Yes, sir? "Pops"...
Misty Brock's over the hill already. You may be getting old, but that was too much.
Brock Ok, so they think I'm an old man, but I don't care. I'm desperate. Pops or Gramps, anything will do!
Brock Could I have somebody's phone number please? Maybe an address, e-mail? Phone numbers, pager numbers, or even your postal numbers, anything will do!

07:38

Script Error

The foreman once again restates that the Trainer that gets rid of the Digda would get a free 4 days and 3 nights stay at the Oats Go Hot Spring. The English dub shortens his line and doesn't refer to the reward length or the name of the resort.

Foreman: Somebody's got to get rid of these Diglett! Don't forget: A resort vacation.
Foreman Translation: As long as you exterminate the Digda, you get a free 4 days and 3 nights stay at the Oats Go Hot Spring!

07:39

Script Error

Shigeru refers to Satoshi being number 4 again and then says goodbye. Gary doesn't refer to Ash as being the 'fourth' but instead calls him a loser. Satoshi is upset that Shigeru insulted him by calling him 'fourth' again while Ash is upset at Gary for calling him a loser.

Character English Translation Japanese
Gary Those Diglett are as good as gone now that Gary Oak is on the case. Number 4 here can go ride in the bus behind me.
Gary So long, losers. Well then, see you!
Brock What about those numbers? Ah... Your phone numbers...
Ash We're losers? Number...
Ash Aw, I can't let him beat me, I can't. "Number 4", he says... I won't lose like that!

08:00

Script Error

The entire Team Rocket scene was rewritten in the English dub to no longer reference their 'numbers' or the continuing gag on a 'different world'.

The Rocket Gang scene in the Japanese original is based off the phrase "keta ga chigau" (桁が違う) which is an idiom that literally means "different/wrong number" but generally speaking means "on a different level" and is the essence of the joke. The first two lines in the scene overly literal are: Musashi: "What's our number?" and Kojiro: "We're on a different level!". Musashi and Kojiro go on a bit about how they're on such a different "number" that their registration numbers have far more digits than the norm.

Nyarth then does a public service announcement using the literal meaning of the phrase by telling people to make sure not to dial the "different/wrong number". The line is also a parody based of on the cell phone company KDDI which was called Kokusai Denshin Denwa (KDD) when this episode originally aired in Japan. KDD's slogan for their ads was "Zero Zero One-derful". 001 is Japan's international calling prefix and 'one' replaces 'won' in 'wonderful. Nyarth's line uses that slogan as a part of his line and instead of replacing 'one' with 'won' he replaces 'won' with 'nya' to get 'nyaderful

At the end of the scene, the continuing gag on a 'different world' is discussed by Musashi and Kojiro in the Japanese original while the English dub adds in the aliens.

Character English Translation Japanese
Jessie We're Pokémon trainers, aren't we? Why don't we try to win that reward? What numbers were we again? Our Rocket Gang registration numbers, I mean.
James That's a brilliant idea, Jessie. We're beyond numbers, so our numbers are beyond the norm!
Jessie If we get rid of the Diglett, we spend a week at that hot spring resort. That's right! Ours have more digits than an international phone number.
Jessie Ohh, I could use a rest. Isn't that just incredible?
James I could use a little relaxation myself, Jessie. Yeah! Clean your ears, listen, and be amazed!
James I'll get rid of those Diglett. Our numbers are...

Even the foreman gets into the 'fourth' ridiculing of Satoshi. The English dub cut out the 'fourth' reference again.

Foreman: You with the Pikachu on your head, listen with your ears, not with your mouth.
Foreman Translation: You, Sorry Butt Number Four-kun! Don't look away!

09:10

Paint Edit

One of the ways of saying the number four in Japanese is 'shi' (四). This brings up the reoccuring 'fourth' gag/pun when Satoshi, Takeshi, and Musashi all respond to Satoshi's annoyance when he realizes part of his name actually has 'shi' (シ) in it and it is a reminder to him that Shigeru called him 'fourth'. Takeshi tries to cheer up Satoshi by telling him that his name has 'shi' in it as well and Musashi in the distance also brings up the point that her name has 'shi' in it as well. The English dub brings up the loser insult instead and Jessie's line seems out of place when she states her name because it doesn't really link well with the previous lines.

Character English Translation Japanese
Satoshi My name is Ash Ketchum, the loser from Palett. That's right, I'm Satoshi. Satoshi... The "shi" in "Satoshi" is Japanese for 4...
Takeshi Don't listen to Gary. You can still catch up. Hang in there! I'm Takeshi too, you know!
Musashi My name's Jessie. And I'm Musashi!
Musashi Look at all those punks. ...I can't be saying that! …

09:20

Script Error

The English dub turns Jessie into a fashion critic while in the Japanese original Rocket Gang were just continuing their 'number' pun again.

Character English Translation Japanese
Jessie Look at all those punks. Each outfit is more dreadful than the last. Look at that number of Trainers.
James Tsk, tsk, tsk. Jessie, there's no need to be catty. My registration number is larger than that.
Meowth What's wrong with catty? That's not it!

09:30

Paint Edit

While Kojiro is attempting to calculate how many Pokémon the trainers have, on the calculator a few symbols like the Yen (¥) symbol are painted out in the English dub.
09:36

Script Error

The English dub removed Nyarth's common phrase 'Coins before cats'.

Meowth: You can do the math, I just want to grab all those Pokémon.
Nyarth: Even without calculating, that's coins before cats! Pokémon are coins, too!

10:45

Script Error

The Japanese original uses the metric system while the English dub uses the imperial system.

Gary: With a height of 8 inches and a weight of 2 pounds, they're hardly candidates to be called the greatest anything of this century.
Shigeru: Its height is 20 centimeters, its weight is 0.8 kilograms. It's way too small to call it the biggest anything of this century.

10:52

Script Error

The English dub cut one of Shigeru's lines just after he explains the size of Digda. It's important as Shigeru is boasting.

Shigeru: I should be able to handle it all on my own.

11:12

Script Error

The cheer is different for Gary's girls. In the Japanese original, the girls say Shigeru is number one!

Character English Translation Japanese
Gary's Girls Gary doesn't dig the Digletts, oh, no... Shigeru, Shigeru, now's your chance, Shigeru!
Gary's Girls Gary doesn't dig the digletts, let's go! Shigeru, Shigeru, you're number one!

11:20

Script Error

In the Japanese original, Shigeru calls the Pokémon he is sending out his 'beloved' (僕の恋人) while Gary in the English dub talks about himself as being the top Pokémon trainer instead.

Character English Translation Japanese
Gary The top Pokémon trainer in action. My beloved, my Pokémon...
Gary This should do the trick. Show everybody your power!

12:10

Script Error

Some of the Pokémon being called out are different in the English dub. Oddly the English dub mentions Porygon even though the dub episode aired about a year after the incident in Japan and it wasn't one of the Pokémon in the Japanese airing. The English dub DVD did not have closed captions for that scene. Click here for audio clip of the English dub scene.

Trainers English Dub: Zubat, Golbat, Porygon, Oddish, Arcanine, Magikarp
Trainers Japanese Translation: All right, go! Zubat! Rougela! Sleeper! Pukurin! Ghost! Butterfree! Pigeot! Koiking! Rafflesia!

12:40

Script Error

The English dub removes the 'fourth' reference again that Satoshi mistakenly says in the Japanese original. The original pun is based off of "yonban" which means 'number 4' and "deban" which means 'turn'.

Ash: Ha, all right, now it's my turn.
Satoshi: It's time for me to step fourth... I mean, step forth!

13:16

Script Error

The Japanese original uses the metric system while the English dub uses the imperial system. The English dub also got the speed of light wrong. It is 186282.397 miles per second, the dub claims 186,000,282 miles per second. Either Gary's 'smart aleck' remark was wrong or the script writers got it wrong.

Gary: That won't work. Diglett can pull their heads in at 186,000,282 miles per second.
Shigeru: Digda pull their heads in at speeds of over 299,792.458 kilometers per second.

13:38

Script Error

Shigeru once again calls Satoshi "Number Four" but coincidentally Gary doesn't call Ash 'loser' like he had been in the other instances the dub replaced the 'fourth' reference.

Character English Translation Japanese
Ash Wow. You've been studying, huh? Heh, you've sure been studying.
Gary Yeah, I've been studying, unlike you. Unlike Number Four, Satoshi-kun. 4

13:45

Script Error

In the Japanese original, Shigeru says goodbye to his 'rivals'. Gary makes no mention of the people there as his 'rivals' and says his farewell in Spanish in the English dub. The term 'Hasta la vista' is a Spanish farewell that can be literally translated as 'Until we meet again' or 'See you later'.

Gary: Hasta la vista, Poképeople.
Shigeru: My rivals, until the day we meet again.

13:47

Paint Edit

Shigeru's fans don't want him to leave and then for some reason, Shigeru making it sound like he's the driver. It's obvious that he isn't though as there is already a driver at the wheel and Shigeru would be too young to drive.

Character English Translation Japanese
Gary's Girls Bye! Bye! Don't leave!
Gary Come on, fans, get in the car. Thank you, friends.
Gary And let's hit the road, shall we? Well then, let me drive you to the city.

14:30

Script Error

At the beginning of the hot spring scene, Kasumi and the guys appear to be naked in the hot spring as its common to do so in Japan. The joke of this scene in the Japanese original is when they get out of the water and they are wearing their swimsuits while the initial impression was they were naked.

Brock: Ash, shouldn't we put some clothes on first?
Takeshi: We're in swimwear in a hot spring... are we supposed to do that?

14:45

Script Error

James in the English dub uses the word "induced" when referring to the principle of evolution. To "induce" evolution in the Pokémon world implies that that a Trainer would use an Evolution stone but that isn't what Rocket Gang did in this scene. The English dub also cut out part of Kojiro's dialog.

James: Some principle of induced evolution.
Kojiro: It doesn't matter how many times we do it... Besides, this "law of evolution"...

15:15

Script Error

The Rocket Gang in the Japanese original are glad that their 'wishes' came true.

Character English Translation Japanese
Jessie & James Something we said? Our wishes got through?
Meowth It could be. Oh.
Jessie & James They're evolving for us. Our wishes to the moon!

16:10

Script Error

The English dub gets Diglett and Dugtrio's roles reversed.

Brock: Diglett plows the ground, and Dugtrio plants the trees.
Takeshi: Dugtrio till the soil, Digda plant the trees.

17:08

Script Error

The foreman had a Semordnilap pun with the words "dam" (damu ダム) and "futile" (muda ムダ) which didn't get translated in the English dub.

Foreman: This project's canceled. I won't build the dam.
Foreman Translation: Planning this dam was a mad idea, wasn't it?

17:23

Script Error

Satoshi talks to Shigeru "in spirit" to tell him that he's studying. This scene also shows that Satoshi actually respects Shigeru too though it's probably not mutual at this point in the series. Ash in the English dub tells Pikachu that he's learned his lesson instead.

Ash: Well, I think I learned my lesson, Pikachu.
Satoshi: Shigeru, I'm studying as well.

17:40

Script Error

Nyarth in the Japanese original says they are omitting the rest of the motto. (At this time in the episode, they wouldn't have had enough time to do the whole motto due to time constraints). While Meowth says something similar in the English dub by saying that Ash and his friends know the rest, omission and knowing are different. The next line said by Musashi and Kojiro was also removed in the English dub.

Character English Translation Japanese
Nyarth They know the rest. We're omitting the rest.
Musashi & Kojiro *No English Dub Dialog* Is that so? とんや

18:02

Script Error

Kojiro references ochazuke (茶漬け) (rice and tea) once again which was removed in the English dub. Meowth in the English dub sounds like an infomercial announcer.

Character English Translation Japanese
Kojiro But now we have a special treat for all of you. Today won't be thinned like tea!
Musashi A treat with a sensational and exciting new flavor. We'll serve you something slightly different, prepared with utmost ca-rry.
Nyarth For the first time on tv! This is our true power!

19:26

Culture Reference

Meowth's "Cat-a-bunga!" is a play on the saying "Cowabunga!" often said by Michaelangelo in the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles series.
19:28

Culture Reference

The 'Hang 10, baby' reference is from the Commodore 64 game 'Take Down' where Mr. Cool would say it in the selection screen. It means Team Rocket wanted a mark of 10 for their 'surfing'.

Rockets English dub: Hang 10, baby, yeah!
Rockets Japanese Translation: Smooth sailing, smooth sailing, smooth sailing!
Rockets:

19:55

Script Error

The foreman's Semordnilap pun with the words "dam" (damu ダム) and "futile" (muda ムダ) was once again removed in the English dub.

Foreman: Not like me. I definitely learned my lesson.
Foreman Translation: I've learned from my mistake. Planning this dam really was mad.

20:33

Script Error

The narrators lines are different from the Japanese original. The Japanese narrator says there was no longer any record of the dam while the English dub narrator said the Diglett and Dugtrio were left in peace. The English dub narrator then basically says that the moral of the episodes story is: "When you do a little digging, you can find something good wherever you look."

The Japanese narrator says that Satoshi's journey is continuing but the English dub narrator basically says to viewers to stay tuned till the next Pokémon episode.

Narrator: And so the Diglett and Dugtrio were left in peace. And everybody learned that, when you do a little digging, you can find something good wherever you look. And now, it's on to the next Pokémon adventure!
Japanese Narrator: Afterwards, there was no record of a dam being made here. The forest's greenery grew slightly bigger. And Satoshi's journey continued.

The edit page for this episode took a lot of time a lot of different people helping, so I'd first like to thank them for all their assistance.

The English dub had so many complete rewrites in this episode that only a fragment of the original concept of this episode was left in the end. There was at least two running gags in this episode, one about Satoshi being 'fourth' and the other was the 'number' one. Kojiro's ochazuke (茶漬け) (rice and tea) was also referenced numerous times and that was cut out as well.

A lot of funny puns in the Japanese original, and with a bit of creative thinking, they were able to be translated while keeping the original spirit of the line intact. I like the translation we were able to get for Kojiro's line (http://www.pocketmonsters.net/episodes/31#Edits-edit1285): My advice is to not dice my rice; it is absolutely not nice! which keeps an almost literal translation intact while keeping the 'cha' (チャ) repetition and replacing it with 'ice'.

There has also been quite a discussion on the moral of this episode being the destruction of a dam for 'environmental' reasons. Hydroelectric power is a renewable energy source and has little pollution compared to other electrical generating methods. Most modern dams take into consideration the large reservoirs required and their impact on animal life and try to mitigate the impact.

A lot of lines were also cut from the English dub and no dialog replaced them. Either they couldn't think of anything to replace it or it was just easier to not even bother.

What a poor episode, which, as many of the episodes of very first season, didn't make much sense.
Digda, reaching the speed of light? For real?! Digda, planting entire forests? For real?!
As for the plot... well, no comment.

What a poor and mediocre episode, with a really poor and mediocre 'plot'...

Summary:
Satoshi, Takeshi, Kasumi and Pikachu get lost as they try taking a road deep into the mountains. As they follow an animal trail not listed on the map, the silence is suddenly broken by the sound of a huge explosion. The startled group hurry towards where the sound came from, and discover a construction site for a huge dam that's bustling with tractors.

The construction foreman tells Satoshi and friends that a group of the underground Pokémon Digda have been hindering their work recently, preventing the construction of the dam from proceeding, and that he has made a call for talented Pokémon Trainers to get rid of these Digda for them.

Since the Trainers who successfully manage to get rid of the Digda will be given a complimentary stay at a luxurious hot spring resort, lots of Trainers have answered his call... and Satoshi spots his rival Shigeru among them......
