Paint Edit

Various signs were painted over in the English dub.

Top Left: PM Salon (PM
Middle: Free Free (フリー フリー)
Top Right: Grass below Doduo removed
Middle Right: Pika Pika Chu
Bottom Right: "Pocket Monsters" changed to "Pokémon"
Bottom Left: Vertical signs painted over
01:15

Script Error

Just as Misty says 'Pokémon Beauty Parlors" a paint edit that says "Salon" is displayed. The Japanese original also calls it a salon (サロン). It's unclear why 4Kids was inconsistent with their own edits in this instance.

Misty: Sure are a lot of Pokémon Beauty Parlors.
Kasumi: There seem to be a lot of Pokémon salons.
01:15

Paint Edit

Various signs were painted over in the English dub as Ash and his friends walk down the street.

Middle Left: Pika Pika (ピカッ ピカッ)
Middle Left Vertical: Beedle PM (ビードル PM)
Center: King (キング)
Center Vertical: Chu P (チュウ P)
Right Center: Arbo (アーボ)
Right Vertical: Free Free
01:15

Paint Edit

Pippi Pokémon Este (ピッピポケモンエステ) was changed to a "Salon" sign with an Eevee. Este (エステ) is short for Esthetic (エステティック) but it is most likely that the Japanese original was intending 'Beauty Salon' (エステティックサロン).
01:46

Script Error

This episode was originally announced under the name "Aspiring Breeders' Street" (あこがれのブリーダーどおり), but the title was changed to "Rokon! Breeder Showdown!"
01:46

Paint Edit

The English dub added the 'Pokémon' logo as part of its title.
01:56

Paint Edit

The word Love (ラブ) was painted out from the sign in the center as well as the word Flower (花) on the sign on the far left in the English dub.
01:59

Paint Edit

Beauty Salon Lovely Charmy (ビューティーサロンラブリーチャーミー) was painted over in the English dub and was replaced with a large R. The text above the arrow in the Japanese original says "This way" (そこスグ).
02:10

Paint Edit

Team Rocket's salon had a lot of signs outside. Most of them were painted over.

Blue Sign: Beauty Salon Lovely Charmy (ビューティーサロンラブリーチャーミー) and the text beside the arrow says: This way (そこスグ)
Heart Sign: Lovely Charmy (ラブリーチャーミー)
Orange Sign: Pokémon Salon (ポケモンサロン ピッ), most likely Pippi (ピッピ) but its cut off.
02:16

Paint Edit

Lovely Charmy (ラブリーチャーミー) is replaced with a large R.
02:19

Script Error

The English dub attempts to keep the 'French' style salon theme that the Japanese original had. In the Japanese original, Kojiro actually says the fake names of Musashi and himself while James in the English dub says the French name of their salon instead. "Roquet" is supposed to be a portmanteau of Rocket + bouquet to make the salon sound more French not the act of hitting another ball in croquet which the term is generally known for.

James: You won't believe how beautiful a Pokémon can be. Step in and see for yourself. Let us dazzle you with the latest fashions by the expert artists of Salon Roquet.
Kojiro: We, the reputed, elegant make-up artists Mademoiselle Mushasshi and Comment allez-vous Kojironé, are cutting-edge in terms of Pokémon fashion.
02:27

Script Error

Satoshi and Kasumi repeat what they hear Kojiro say in French in the Japanese original airing while Brock in the English dub thinks the display looks like a Christmas tree.

Character English Translation Japanese
Ash Did he just say, "Salon Roquet"? Mademoiselle Mushasshi?
Misty Why does that name sound so familiar? Comment allez-vous Kojironé?
Brock Whoa. Is that supposed to be a Pokémon or a Christmas tree? Anyway, it seems like they have pretty bad taste.

02:35

Script Error

Musashi brings up the idea that 'natural breeders' like Yuki are a thing of the past in the Japanese original. Kojiro refers to their style as kitsch whereas James just talks about hairstyling.

Character English Translation Japanese
Jessie Bring your drab old Pokémon to Salon Roquet. The natural breeders are old news now.
Jessie For a complete Pokémon makeover, including jewelry. From now on, Pokémon will have gorgeous decor...
James And hairstyling. ...pop and kitsch...
Rockets We'll make your Pokémon a pretty-mon. ...acknowledging their beauty! Yay!

03:08

Paint Edit

Lovely Charmy (ラブリーチャーミー) is removed from the front counter.
03:09

Script Error

Nyarth's familiar saying is replaced with Meowth just counting.

Meowth: 120, 130, 140, 150, 160, 170, 180, 190, 200!
Nyarth: Coins before cats, coins before cats, coins before cats, coins before cats...
03:17

Script Error

Meowth says that Jessie and James are spending their money on TV advertisements in the English dub. Nyarth doesn't specifically say what type of advertising they are spending the money on.

Meowth: TV commercials are a big waste of money.
Nyarth: Our hard-earned profits are gonna vanish.
03:36

Paint Edit

Rokon (ロコン) was removed from the signs.
03:38

Paint Edit

Rokon (ロコン) was removed from the door and replaced with a picture of Vulpix.
03:45

Paint Edit

Pokémon Salon Rokon (ポケモンサロンロコン) was removed from the door and replaced with a picture of Vulpix. Oddly, the previous scene in the Japanese original did not have the Pokémon Salon (ポケモンサロン) part on the door.
05:21

Script Error

The English dub adds a small sexual innuendo for Brock while he's a bit nervous talking to Suzy.

Brock: Uh, I wanna breed like you. I mean, I wanna be a breeder like you.
Takeshi: It's my dream to become a breeder of your caliber!
06:17

Script Error

The English dub added an extra line for Brock.

Brock: And her hugely popular web site records over 10,000 hits per day.
06:30

Script Error

Takeshi makes a mention of Yuki having been ranked number one 4 years in a row in reader polls for most popular breeder held in the magazine "Pokémon Friend Special" (ポケモンの友別冊), presumably a sister magazine of "Monthly Pokémon Friend" (月刊ポケモンの友), a magazine found in Mr. Fuji's house in the Gameboy games.
10:35

Paint Edit

Lovely Charmy (ラブリーチャーミー) is removed.
10:46

Script Error

In the Japanese original, the lecture is about grooming even though they are doing massages.

Misty: A lecture on Pokémon massage?
Kasumi: A Pokémon grooming lecture?
11:54

Script Error

James starts talking unrelated rubbish in the English dub.

James: Roses are the flowers of love and romance. Ohh! We also paint daffodils.
Kojiro: We have a perpetual spring of talent, oh... It's almost scary.
12:01

Script Error

The English dub adds some more French to Jessie's line that wasn't in the Japanese original. "Tout suite" means immediately in French.

Jessie: Meowth, send in the next customer tout suite.
Musashi: Nyarth, hurry up and call in the next customer.
12:03

Script Error

In a follow up line to Nyarth's "Coin's before Cats" line, Nyarth says Musashi isn't treating cats very nicely. Meowth in the English dub just says he's counting money.

Meowth: Can't you see I'm counting money here?
Nyarth: You don't treat cats very nicely.
13:00

Script Error

The English dub adds a lot of lines that are hard to hear but the closed captions indicate what they say.

Character English Translation Japanese
Jessie A dab of rouge. La la li, le le lu, lu lu le, le le lo... Lo lo la, la la li...
James A bit of blush.
Jessie A smidgen of lipstick.
James A modicum of mascara.
Jessie A pinch of powder.

13:03

Culture Reference

The outfit the Rocket Gang style Kasumi in is "Shinorer fashion" (シノラーファッション), named after the celebritiy Tomoe Shinohara (篠原ともえ) who popularized this style in 1997.
13:36

Script Error

Kojiro obviously thinks their makeover of Kasumi looks ridiculous as he threatens to make her look 'unexpectedly beautiful' whereas James in the English dub says he'll make her look like Frankenstein.

James: If you don't want your face painted like Frankenstein.
Kojiro: I'll make your face unexpectedly beautiful.
13:50

Paint Edit

Pokémon Salon Rokon (ポケモンサロンロコン) was removed from the large sign. Rokon (ロコン) was removed from the smaller sign.
14:45

Script Error

Musashi wonder's who the girl that comes into their salon is while Kojiro is able to identify her as one of the other breeder's on the street. Kojiro also specifically states that its a Pokémon face that matters most.

Character English Translation Japanese
Jessie What's she talking about? Who's this person?
James What does she know about breeding Pokémon? Isn't she a breeder in this neighborhood?
James Who cares about the inside? Outside counts. You're too old-fashioned. Pokémon are about the face. The face.

15:32

Paint Edit

All the signs are painted over in the English dub. 4Kids left off the 'R' they added on the heart sign in this scene.

Yellow Sign: Perm Cut (パーマ カット)
Heart Sign: Lovely Charmy (ラブリーチャーミー)
Orange Sign: Pokémon Salon (ポケモンサロン ピッ), most likely Pippi (ピッピ) but its cut off.
15:56

Script Error

The Rocket Gang motto is a bit different than the Team Rocket motto.

Character English Translation Japanese
Jessie To protect the world from boring fashion... Putting pretty make-up on the world!
James To dress all people with flash and passion... Gorgeously dressing up the world!
Jessie To give all Pokémon pretty faces... Blossoming the flower of "love" and "beauty"!
James To extend our art to outer spaces... The lovely, charmy artists!
Jessie Salon Roquet. When it comes to chic, we know what's right. The pair who aim for the Big Bang of beauty!
James Surrender your taste or prepare to fight. Beautiful world, a new world of love and beauty is waiting for us!

15:58

Paint Edit

The ?taru Poppo (?タル ポッポ) sign is painted out in the English dub.
16:00

Culture Reference

Musashi and Kojiro's dress up as Andre and Oscar from The Rose of Versailles (ベルサイユのばら) during the battle.
17:03

Paint Edit

The Poppo (ポッポ) sign is painted out in the English dub. Another sign in the background is also painted out.
17:47

Script Error

Team Rocket says their normal blast off motto but Rocket Gang does a pun about them becoming 'stars'.

Team Rocket: We're blasting off again!
Rocket Gang: We're becoming stars!
18:06

Paint Edit

The pink "?barii Pony" (?バリーポニー) sign was painted over in the English dub.
18:26

Paint Edit

Rokon (ロコン) was removed from the awning.
20:26

Paint Edit

Salon Dodorio (サロン ドードリオ) was painted out near the very end of the episode.
20:31

Script Error

Team Rocket in the English dub is more concerned about have a disguise instead of trying to tell the crowd that they are actually right like Rocket Gang tries to.

Character English Translation Japanese
James Now we need a total makeover so nobody we ripped off can recognize us! They don't get it! The face is what really matters, for both Pokémon and humans!
Jessie They're all just jealous because they're not attractive enough to wear our designs. The beautiful ones win in the end, just you watch!
Rockets Back to the drawing board! This feels bad!
Narrator So long... Salon Roquet! To be continued!

I was always a fan of this episode in the English dub original. Brock's classic line "Uh, I wanna breed like you. I mean, I wanna be a breeder like you." is a favorite line of mine overall in the series. Lines like that show 4Kids was willing to be a bit risque with some of their stuff.

I really liked this episode, since it's one of the few ones entirely dedicated to Pokémon breeding, and where Takeshi plays a greater role than usual.
Though, it's funny, because I didn't remember Takeshi actually got a Rokon... I wonder how long he kept it;

He gave it back to Yuki next time they met, in episode 171, and never really used it a whole lot.

The most funny scene in the Pocket Monsters ,i think, is Misty's flashy(ridiculous i mean) face. When i first watched this episode i laughed so many times because of this face:):).

Summary:
Satoshi and friends have come to "Scissors Street", which Takeshi insisted they visit. It's a town filled with Pokémon Breeders, famous for its many Pokémon Beauty Salons.

"Rokon", the Pokémon Beauty Salon Takeshi wanted to visit, is also found here. Yuki, the owner of "Rokon", is a master Breeder who has won the grand prize in the Pokémon Breeder Contest for three years straight. However, recently a salon called "Lovely Charmy" has been making a killing on gaudy fashion, which worries the owners of old-school salons.
