Summary
While on route to Saffron City, Ash and his friends arrive at the sea and they look down at it from a cliff. Ash notices a flock of Butterfree preparing for the season of love nearby. Brock told Ash that if he didn't let his Butterfree cross the ocean, it couldn't leave any offspring. Ash was determined to be a good 'parent' and told Butterfree to go look for a mate.

Misty was surprised that there was a hot air balloon available as they rented one to go up in the air. Ash's Butterfree was released to go look for a mate and after a few minutes of looking, Ash was surprised it didn't find any other Butterfree that it liked. Brock explains that it could be the fact that there wasn't any that was its type.

A bunch more balloons appear with Butterfree trainers who released their Pokémon to find their mates. Brock explains that this is normal for trainers to come there at this time of year to release their Butterfree. A girl trainer releases her Butterfree and Brock instantly tells Ash's Butterfree to chose her Butterfree as its mate. Misty tells Ash's Butterfree to ignore Brock and just continue looking.

The Pink Butterfree was love at first sight for Ash's Butterfree when it went looking again for a mate in the flock of Butterfree. It tried to impress the Pink Butterfree with its moves and courtship dance but the Pink Butterfree was initially unimpressed and slapped Ash's Butterfree so it would leave her alone. Ash's Butterfree quickly leaves the flock and hides in the nearby forest.

Ash and friends gets out of the balloon and goes looking for his Butterfree. Ash finds it behind a tree sad. Brock sympathies with Ash's Butterfree and he realizes what its going through. Misty is quick to joke at Brock's expense though as he knows his track record when it comes to love and girls. Misty then gives it some advice of her own. Brock then gives Ash's Butterfree a scarf hoping that its new look might help.

Ash's Butterfree goes looking for the Pink Butterfree again and Ash tells it to use its moves to try to impress the Pink Butterfree but its not impressed. Suddenly a helicopter appears and Team Rocket does their motto. They then extend a giant net and begin collecting all the Butterfree in it. Ash's Butterfree tries to stop them but it cannot but it follows after Team Rocket as they make their getaway.

Ash's Butterfree returned to Ash after it found out where Team Rocket went. Ash and his friends bust the window and do the Rocket Gang motto. After the flock of Butterfree got captured by Team Rocket, the Pink Butterfree's attitude towards Ash's Butterfree changed after it saw just how hard it worked for free it and the rest of the Butterfree. Misty's Starmie attacked Team Rocket while Ash's Butterfree released the Butterfree flock.

Team Rocket get back into their helicopter and try to recapture the Butterfree flock but Pikachu got onto Ash's Butterfree. Pikachu then jumped onto helicopter and Thunderbolted it cause it to explode sending Team Rocket blasting off again.

The Pink Butterfree later decided it liked Ash's Butterfree after it realized that was a great Pokémon and the two of them ended up leaving to cross the ocean and have offspring. Butterfree was sad to leave Ash but it was now leaving to start its own family. After releasing Butterfree, Ash and his friends continued their journey towards Saffron City.

Script Error

Apparently Brock is quite blind in the English dub as he cannot see large air balloons from the ground. He should open his eyes more often.

Brock: We'll probably see lots of other balloons once we get up into the air.
Takeshi: It just proves that many people use them during this season.
06:31

Production Art

A production cell was posted on Yahoo Auctions in July 2022 which featured the scene of Pikachu and Ash's Butterfree. A high quality clean background scan was also showcased on the auction.
06:33

Script Error

Brock states in the English dub that he could write a book about love which Misty jokes would be his autobiography. Takeshi in the Japanese original instead suggests to Satoshi's Butterfree that he could help it learn the basics of love which Kasumi jokes would be teaching it how to get dumped, something it already knew.
English Dub:
Brock: I could write a book about the secrets of love and heartache.
Misty: I guess that book would be your autobiography.

Japanese Original:
Takeshi: No helping that. Shall I teach you the basics of love?
Kasumi: Do you mean you'll teach it ways to get dumped instantly?
08:36

Paint Edit

The banner flying behind the helicopter had part of the Rocket Gang Motto on it in the Japanese original.

To prevent the world's destruction! (世界の破壊を防ぐため)

To protect the world's peace! (世界の平和を守るため)
09:07

Script Error

Meowth in the English dub makes a jokes off the fact that they are going to catch the Butterfree in a net.

Meowth: Let's do some networking.
Nyarth: Take them all!
(ニャース): 取り尽くすニャース
10:43

Script Error

James makes a basketball pun as they are catching the Butterfree with the net. Kojiro in the Japanese original just state they are 'getting' the Butterfree.

James: Nothing but net.
Kojiro: We're getting them!
(コジロウ): ゲットゲット!
11:15

Script Error

Just after Ash's Butterfree uses Stun Spore and doesn't work James jokes in the English dub that its attack was ineffective.

James: That was a stunning failure.
Kojiro: It isn't working, isn't working.
(コジロウ): 効かない! 効かない!
12:45

Script Error

The number of Butterfree caught by Team Rocket is different between the English dub and Japanese original.

Meowth: 98, 99, 100!
Nyarth: 88, 89, 90!
(ニャース): 88ニャース、89ニャース、90ニャース!
12:55

Script Error

In the English dub, Meowth states that when they report to the boss about their Butterfree hoard, he would be re-promoted to 'top cat' again which implies that he was the 'top cat' at some point. Nyarth in the Japanese original just states that when they report to the boss.

Meowth: Yeah. When the boss hears about this I'll be top cat again.
Nyarth: Something like that. When we report this to the boss...
21:19

Script Error

The original version credits Mari Amako (尼子真理) as playing "pretty girl" (美少女), rather than the Butterfree she actually plays.

For me this is the episode that began my real love for pokemon and its still my favourite episode. It doesn't matter that I haven't seen the episode for about awhile. I still love it and I still remember it. Perhaps what I remember about it is actually different to what the episode contains. But its still the episode I adore. Looking at the episode pics for Diamond and Pearl as of late has interested me in that Butterfree has appeared a few times. I don't imagine a reunion but if it did happen that would be lovely. Its no co-incidence that Butterfree is also my favourite pokemon. There's just something about butterflies that interest me and Butterfree is so gorgeous.

I'll admit to never seeing the original episode. Its not that I dislike subs or dislike the Japanese version. Just that I am perfectly happy with the English release. I can't imagine this episode being one that had that many changes anyway.

Of course there is another reason for my love of this episode. In the early days of the pokemon community online (though I'm not even sure 2000 can be considered early) information from Japan was more scarce and episode pics and the like were difficult to find or non-existant. Anyway, in this era people tending to hang on anybodies word of what was happening or happened in Japan. Of course being in such a situation, a few people would interpret things wrongly. And one of those, was that there was a message at the end saying Butterfree or it was stated that Butterfree would die soon thereafter. Now of course, being the pokemon community this would cause some rifts and arguments to break out. But for me it only makes the episode that more interesting. Hmm I have probably said too much. But this episode still shines and I always shed a few tears when the credits close.

Summary:
As Satoshi and friends continue their way towards Yamabuki City, they reach a place where the road continues along a steep cliff. There, they see a rabble of Butterfree flying over the sea, dancing in the air. Takeshi the Pokémon Breeder explains that it's currently the mating season for Butterfree. During this season, Butterfree fly across the sea to find a mating partner so they can produce offspring.

Satoshi directs his own Butterfree towards the rabble. Satoshi's Butterfree performs a courtship dance for a pink Butterfree, but seemingly gets turned down. Satoshi, Kasumi and Takeshi attempt to cheer up Butterfree, but the shock was too much for it.

Then, the Rocket Gang show up to capture all the Butterfree, including the pink Butterfree that Satoshi's Butterfree fell for. Satoshi's Butterfree confronts the Rocket Gang, wanting the save the aught Butterfree. Will it get the heart of the pink Butterfree in the end...?
