Ash, continuing his journey through the Unova region on his question to become a Pokémon Master, has finished his Gym match in Straiton City and obtained his first badge. And with Iris and Cilan, who have come to travel with him, he is now heading to Nacrene City where the next Gym is located. Our heroes continue their journey, traveling through a nearby forest to Nacrene City. Ash holds is stomach, complaining that he is hungry. Iris suggests that they should stop to have lunch. Ash agrees that her idea sounds delicious. Iris states that she will prepare lunch, dashing over a small hill, disappearing to prepare lunch. While Iris gathers lunch, Ash and Cilan locate a tree stump in the forest to be used as a temporary table. Iris returns shortly after, apologizing for the long wait. Iris greets the two, setting down a bowl containing an assortment of fruit including apples, pears, and bananas. Ash complements Iris, stating that the fruit looks tasty. Cilan states there is nothing but fruit in the basket, under the assumption that Iris would have actually cooked their lunch, rather than simply gathered raw fruit. Cilan demands for everyone to hold on a moment before eating.

Afterwards, Cilan prepares a rectangular table where Iris and Ash are seated, awaiting their lunch. Cilan constructs a small burner, which he uses to prepare two dishes from the fruit that Iris had previously gathered. Cilan walks over, placing two plates on the table. Cilan explains that he ground the fruit, pulverized it, and baked it into pancakes. Ash compliments Cilan that his cooking smells great. Ash reaches out, grabbing the food and begins devouring it, muffling that it is delicious while he eats. Iris suggests that fruit is best when it's raw, afterwards taking a bit of Cilan's food. Cilan questions Iris how she likes his cooking. Iris compliments Dent on his cooking, suggesting that if she can eat delicious meals like his every day, traveling with Ash and himself wouldn't be so bad. Cilan informs the two that he has prepared seconds. Ash finishes devouring the last pancake, and rushes over to the cooktop. Iris shouts for Ash to leave some for her. Ash examines the cookware, however is not able to find any additional food. Ash questions Cilan where the seconds are. Cilan steps over stating that he was sure he had left seconds. After a few moments, the grass begins rustling. Iris looks over, suggesting that there is something in the tall grass. Ash begins crawling through the thicket, coming to a clearing containing a Snivy. The Snivy is seen eating the last of Cilan's "pancakes".

Ash thrusts a Monster Ball at the Snivy, which explodes open absorbing its essence. The Monster Ball struggles with Snivy, illuminating in red to notify Ash that the capture isn't complete. After a few moments, the Monster Ball explodes open, releasing Snivy. Snivy uses her tail and slaps the Monster Ball back towards Ash. Snivy jumps into the thicket, escaping from Ash. Iris suggests that the reason Snivy went into his Monster Ball is because it is wild. Cilan confirms that Iris's observation is correct. Ash states that he has been thinking about making friends with a Grass-type Pokémon. Ash rushes through the tall grass and manages to relocate Snivy, whom continues devouring the food that Cilan had previously prepared. Ash commands for Pikachu to use Quick Attack. Pikachu dashes forward in a blazing speed in an attempt to take advantage of Snivy's opening. Snivy dodges the attack, forcing Pikachu to slam into the ground, creating a huge plume of debris and smoke. Cilan states that Snivy are smart and fast Pokémon and that its capture won't be easy. Snivy finishes the last of its food, bringing its full attention to the battle. Iris suggests that the Snivy is making fun of him. Pikachu begins generating electrical energy, in preparation to launch Thunderbolt. Snivy responds, launching Attract which places Pikachu in a confused state. Pikachu begins wobbling back and forth, affected by Snivy's Attract. Ash questions Pikachu what is wrong. Iris states that Pikachu was hit directly by Attract. Cilan explains that Attract is a move which confuses Pokémon of the opposite gender. Iris states that since the attack worked on Pikachu, it would confirm that Snivy is a female (which also confirms that Pikachu is male). Snivy continues her onslaught, using her Vine Whip to repeatedly strike Pikachu. Ash rushes over and grasps Pikachu, shielding him from the attacks. Snivy notices Ash's noble action and ceases her attacks. Snivy follows-up with Leaf Tornado and successfully escapes into the distance. Ash rushes over to the crater created by Leaf Tornado, looking around in an attempt to catch a glimpse of Snivy. Cilan states that Snivy isn't an average Snivy, possessing high-level moves. Iris suggests that Snivy must have abandoned its Trainer. Ash questions Iris what she is referring to. Iris responds that Snivy is a very clever Pokémon and will sometimes abandon incompetent Trainers. Cilan confirms that the Snivy that Ash previously battled could be one of the Snivy who have abandoned their trainer. Ash responds that he is even now more motivated. Ash launches a Monster Ball into the sky, which explodes releasing Pidove. Ash commands for Pidove to examine the area and locate Snivy.

Meanwhile, Team Rocket has initiated successful communications with Giovanni. Giovanni states that there is something he has to warn them about. Giovanni continues that a mysterious organization (Plasma) has become active in the Unova region and that there is a possibility that they already sense Team Rocket's movements. Giovanni directs for Jessie, James, and Meowth to pay close attention, terminating the communication. Jessie questions James about who the mysterious organization is that Giovanni refers to. James confirms that even Giovanni hasn't been able to obtain detailed information yet regarding the organization. James states that they need to strengthen their army in the meantime and should obtain more Pokémon. During the conversation, Snivy watches from a distance. After James finishes suggesting they should obtain more Pokémon, Snivy begins walking away however manages to disturb the tall grass, drawing Team Rocket's attention to it. Jessie states they should start (building their Pokémon Army) with Snivy. Jessie launches a Monster Ball at Snivy; however she utilizes her grace to dodge the object. Meowth launches skyward, sharpening his claws in preparation for Fury Swipes. Meowth descends, striking downward, questioning Snivy how his attack was.

After a few moments, Meowth turns around to discover that he had missed Snivy, and managed to strike a nearby boulder. Snivy successfully escapes Team Rocket's capture attempt, escaping into a mountainous region. Snivy lies down onto the ground and begins pondering on Ash's previous noble action to save Pikachu from her attacks. Snivy, having abandoned her previous trainer, continues to ponder on Ash and his actions as a trainer towards his own Pokémon. Afterwards, Pidove manages to successfully locate Snivy, circling around to alert ash to her whereabouts. Ash notices Pidove's actions and shouts for her to guide him to Snivy's location. Pidove squeals and soars off towards Snivy's location, with Ash, Iris, and Cilan following behind. Pidove manages to awaken Snivy as it approaches its location. Snivy walks over to an edge, looking down to discover Ash and Pikachu. Ash shouts out demanding for another match with Snivy. A few moments later, Oshawott explodes from his Monster Ball and begins hitting his scallsword, suggesting that he would like to confront Snivy. Ash questions Oshawott if he will be able to succeed this time. Oshawott hits his scallsword in a confident state, suggesting he can conquer Snivy. Ash, Pikachu, and Oshawott begin ascending the small hill in an attempt to reach Snivy. Snivy responds, using her tail to knock a small boulder down the hill. Ash, Pikachu, and Oshawott take cover behind a nearby rock formation, dodging the attack. Snivy strides off confident in the success of her attack. Moments later, Ash manages to successfully reach the plateau of the hill, shouting that he will never give up.

Oshawott launches a strong Water Gun attack at Snivy; however Snivy dodges, forcing the attack to collide with the ground. A spot of water manages to land on Snivy; however she wipes it off her face with minimal effort. Cilan and Iris manage to successfully reach the top of the hill. Iris shouts at Ash that a Water-type like Oshawott has a disadvantage against a Grass-type like Snivy. Ash responds that he is well aware of the type disadvantage. Cilan suggests that Ash must have gained the motivation of Oshawott. Iris responds that Ash is simply battling without thinking again. Snivy extends her grass whips, launching Grass Whip towards Oshawott. Oshawott responds, using his scallsword to reflect the attack. Oshawott retaliates, harnessing energy in his scallsword in preparation for Razor Shell. Snivy anticipates the attack, launching Attract which immobilizes Oshawott. Snivy follows-up with Vine Whip, striking Oshawott and knocking him backwards. Ash extends his hand, recalling Oshawott into his Monster Ball. After Oshawott's defeat, Snivy begins dashing off further into the mountainous region. Ash and Pikachu follow after Snivy however are unable to keep up with her agility. Ash commands for Pidove to track Snivy, who responds, blazing off towards Snivy. Iris complains that Ash should give up on capturing Snivy; however he has quite a persistent personality. Cilan suggests that Ash actually has will-power. Snivy continues her escape by continuing through a nearby forest. Ash and Pikachu continue their assault on foot, rushing through the forest in an attempt to keep sight on Snivy. In order to continue pursuing Snivy, Ash hops upward grabbing onto a group of vines and begins swinging through the forest in an attempt to reach Snivy. Snivy manages to reach the end of the small forest, descending from a tree and landing onto a patch of lilies housed in a pond. Ash continues swinging through the forest; however his vine breaks shortly after, thrusting him downward onto Snivy's lily. Snivy dashes away moments before Ash slams into the lily. Ash returns to his feet, however after a few seconds, the lily begins to sink, unable to withstand Ash and Pikachu's weight. Ash and Pikachu attempt to struggle however become trapped in a bottomless swap. Ash shouts for Pikachu to climb onto his shoulders. Ash and Pikachu continue to sink into the murky water. After a few moments, Ash directs for Pikachu to climb atop his head. Pikachu hesitates for a moment, however Ash suggests that Pikachu shouldn't worry and to hurry up and climb.

Iris and Cilan manage to successfully reach Ash's location and throw a broken vine into the swap beside Ash. Ash grasps onto the vine while Iris and Cilan pull Ash towards the ground. Ash thanks Cilan and Iris, stating that they had saved himself and Pikachu. Cilan questions Ash if he would like to still continue to attempt to pursue Snivy. Ash responds that he definitely would like to continue to pursue Snivy. Iris suggests that Ash should give up already because Snivy is abnormally strong and is not the kind of opponent that Ash can handle. Cilan states that while Ash's will-power impresses him, the capture may be difficult. Ash responds that he will definitely capture Snivy. Snivy continues her escape, managing to reach the edges of the forest. Snivy approaches a nearby stream and bends down to take a drink. Pidove manages to successfully locate Snivy's location, alerting Ash to her whereabouts. Ash manages to successfully relocate Snivy and shouts that she cannot escape any more. Ash extends his wrist, launching a Monster Ball releasing Tepig. Iris examines the battle, stating that Ash selected Tepig to battle Snivy. Cilan suggests that although a Fire type like Tepig has the advantage; it can still be affected by Attract. Iris shouts out to be careful so that Snivy's Attract doesn't attract Tepig. Ash responds that he is aware of the situation. Ash shouts that Tepig has to strike first, before Snivy is able to utilize Attract. Tepig bursts forward, releasing an array of cinders forming Ember. Snivy anticipates the attack and responds launching Attract, rendering Tepig in a confused state. Ash extends his arm recalling Tepig into his Monster Ball. Snivy waves her arm, arrogantly gesturing for Ash to continue with his next attack. Pidove begins squealing, indicating that it would like an attempt at Snivy. Iris questions why Ash didn't choose Pikachu. Cilan states that against a Grass type, Pidove will be more advantageous. Iris suggests that without a countermeasure against Attract, the result will be the same.

Pidove strikes forward, flapping its wings, launching a devasting Gust towards Snivy. Snivy successfully dodges the attack and responds with Attract. Ash shouts for Pidove to use Quick Attack in an attempt to dodge Attract. Pidove prepares to launch Quick Attack, however is struck with Snivy's Attract. After a few moments, Pidove continues flying, unaffected by Snivy's Attract. Cilan and Iris confirm that Pidove is female and when both are female, Attract won't have any effect. Cilan suggests that Ash was aware of Pidove's gender and it is the reason he chose to battle with Pidove. Iris, surprised at Ash's intelligence, states she has changed his opinion of him a little. Ash responds that he had no idea that Pidove was female, causing Iris to sigh. Snivy extends her grass whips, thrusting them towards the airborne Pidove. Snivy follows-up with Grass Tornado; however Pidove utilizes her agility to evade the attack. Pidove retaliates with Gust, which strikes the ground enveloping Snivy. Pidove continues by launching Air Cutter, which barely misses Snivy, slamming into the ground beside her. Pidove gathers energy in her wings, blazing forward in a Quick Attack, striking Snivy for a direct hit. As Snivy struggles to stand, Ash launches an empty Monster Ball which absorbs Snivy's essence. The Monster Ball struggles, as Snivy continues to fight against its capture. The Monster Ball explodes, releasing Snivy who continues to struggle with standing. Pidove launches into another Quick Attack, however Snivy retaliates striking Pidove during her descent with Vine Whip. Pidove launches her final attack, extending her wings and propels an astonishing Air Cutter attack which strikes Snivy for a direct hit. Ash launches an empty Monster Ball, which recaptures Snivy's essence. The Monster Ball rotates back and forth, attempting to secure Snivy. After a few moments, the Monster Ball's movements cease, confirming Snivy's capture. After her capture, Ash releases his newly captured Snivy, welcoming her to his team. Ash suggests that they both should aim for victory in the Unova league. Ash has successfully obtained his fifth Pokémon, Snivy. With another friend in tow, Ash aims for the next gym and heads for Nacrene City. What kind of battle awaits him there?
