Summary
Ash lays in bed wondering what happened before. Misty, Brock, Mrs. Ketchum, and Professor Oak are sitting on the couch outside Ash's room. Brock tells everyone that Ash is depressed. Misty says that Ash should be happy that he got up to the fifth room. She knows Ash can't mope in the room forever. She walks in the room and offers him something to eat. Ash doesn't want anything. Then she offers him to go and buy souveneirs, but Ash pushes her away. The two of them start to fight. Mrs. Ketchum tells Ash that Misty is only trying to help, but Ash doesn't want her help. Misty tells him that he never even trained, so he's lucky that he made it to the top 16. Professor Oak walks in the room saying that Misty has a point. If Ash took time to train his Charizard, he would've made it further. Misty bends down to Pikachu and calls Ash "lazy." The two of them start to fight again causing Pikachu to shock everyone in the room.

Richie is in the locker room staring at his Pokéballs. Ash and co. walks in and they wish Richie good luck. Ash tells Richie that he is an awesome trainer, and he knows that Richie will win. Richie thanks him for his support. The battle begins. Both trainers have only one Pokémon left. Ash and co. are cheering for Richie. Assumpta, Richie's opponent, sends out Ivysaur. Richie sends out Pikachu. Ivysaur immediately begins to charge at Pikachu. Pikachu barely dodges the attacks that Ivysaur uses. Pikachu uses Thundershock, but Ivysaur uses Vine Whip to block the attacks. Then Ivysaur tackles Pikachu to the ground. Pikachu can't get up, and Assumpta wins the battle. Ash and co. can't believe that Richie lost.

Richie stares at the river with Pikachu in his arms. Ash walks up to Richie. Richie tells Ash that they both have something in common. The two Pikachus begin to play with each other. They can both learn a lot from losing. Team Rocket sneaks up behind them. They plan to steal their Pokémon. Richie tells Ash that he was sure that he was going to win. He never knew the Pokémon League was going to be extremely hard. Richie says that losing isn't that bad because you can learn from your mistakes. Ash tells himself that Richie isn't sad that he lost because he just wants to do better. Ash and Richie then make a promise to become Pokémon Masters no matter what happens. Suddenly, the Pikachus fall in a hole. Ash and Richie both run to their Pokémon, but they fall in a different hole.

Up above is Team Rocket, and they say their motto. Ash tries to climb up the hole, but he falls down. Then the two boys even fall down deeper. James uses a fishing pole to grab the Pikachu. The Pikachu are put in a cage which is shock proof. Team Rocket begins to walk away when Ash and Richie fly out with Pidgeotto and Butterfree. Ash sends out Bulbasaur. Bulbasaur tries to grab the cage with Vine Whip, but James doesn't let it. Weezing uses Smog, but Pidgeotto blows the gas away with Gust. The gas covers up Team Rocket. Bulbasaur uses Razor Leaf to cut the fishing line. Richie sends out Charmander. Charmander uses Flamethrower on Team Rocket. Team Rocket screams as the flames consume them. The two Pikachus recharge the cage with Thunderbolt. Ash sends out Squirtle who uses Water Gun on Team Rocket. The flames burn out. James notices that the cage is gone. Ash and Richie throws the cage at Team Rocket. The cage shocks them, and they blast off into the air.

Misty and Brock runs over to Ash and Richie. Misty and Brock tells them that they are going to have a big dinner and then go to the closing ceremony. Ash says that you get a badge at the ceremony. Misty invites Richie over for dinner. He gladly accepts the invitation, and they all run back. At the ceremony, all the trainers that participated comes out. Goodshow presents everyone with a badge for their achievements. Meanwhile, Team Rocket is digging another hole. They plan to tunnel their way over to the stadium. Then the three top trainers are honored. The lights shut off and fireworks are let off in the sky. Everyone stares at the many colors. Team Rocket starts to dig upwards. A bomb falls underground. It explodes and Team Rocket blasts off again.

The fireworks are over, and Ash and Richie sits alone at the stadium. The two Pikachus run to their trainers. Richie tells Ash to train hard. Ash tells Richie not to forget his promise. Then Richie leaves the stadium. Ash remembers his past battles in the Pokémon League. Ash asks Pikachu if it is ready to train harder. Pikachu nods its head. Misty calls for Ash. Ash sees Misty, Brock, Mrs. Ketchum, and Professor Oak. They plan to go back to Pallet Town.
