Special First-Airing Segment Data Broadcast

The Pocket Monsters Best Wishes data broadcast was an additional segment that allowed people with compatible settop to play a game to capture a Pokémon. During the original TV Tokyo airing, the featured Pokémon could be registered in the data broadcast zukan by correctly answering a question about its weaknesses as the ending theme played.

Viewers could push the d-button on their remote control and participate in the data broadcast. They would choose one of the three gen 5 starters as their first Pokémon (in later 3-months periods, Pikachu could also be chosen), then fill up a "battle gauge" by watching the program. If the gauge was full by the time the episode ended, they could have a "Pokémon battle", where they would select one of three elemental types to attack that episode's Pokémon with. If they choose a super effective move, they could get Pokémon and register them in their personal Zukan.

Every 3 months, participants would be given a personal password which could be used on the official anime website to download a customized calendar wallpaper for the next three months of the year, featuring the starter Pokémon they had chosen and the exact Pokémon they had managed to catch through the data broadcast during that most recent 3-month period.
