Umberto lived on an island where there were many Kabuto fossils and he believed that should the fossils ever be disturbed the moon would turn red and the island would sink into the sea.

When an Expedition Team led by Nurse Joy arrived on the Kabuto island, Umberto tried to ward them off the island by attempting to make boulders fall on the team. Ash Ketchum managed to track Umberto down and he admitted that he was not trying to harm them, just warn them off. He told them the prophecy of the island which stated: "When the scavengers arrive, the moon will glow an angry red. The land itself will vanish and be swallowed by the sea! When the sea comes to swallow you, flee to the forest." Nurse Joy did not believe the tale of the red moon and continued looking for the Kabuto fossils.

After the Expedition Team disturbed the fossils the moon turned red and the Kabuto island began to rumble and shake. The team did not have time to reach their boats so Umberto told them to build rafts from the trees on the island and he managed to sail away from the island along with Ash Ketchum, Tracey Sketchit, Misty and the Expedition Team.
