Summary
At Professor Oak's lab, Bayleef is sleeping and Bulbasaur is roaming around. Up above, Hoppip, Skiploom, and Jumpluff are flying. Phanpy is trying to get some berries from a tree, Kingler is walking around, and Marril are dancing. Kingler stares at the dancing Marrils and grows dizzy. Kingler accidently pinches Phanpy. Phanpy jumps up in pain and then rolls down the hill with Bulbasaur chasing it. Totodile is dancing happily but then it gets hit from Phanpy. Totodile lands on the ground next to a Snorlax. Snorlax starts to roll over, but Bulbasaur uses Vine Whip to save Totodile just when Snorlax rolls over. Cyndaquil is sitting on the ground peacefully when Snorlax starts to chase it. Cyndaquil runs off the edge of a cliff and lands on the ground. The Snorlax barely hits it and Cyndaquil goes flying in the air. Then Cyndaquil uses a Flamethrower which hits a bunch of Tauros. Bulbasaur watches helplessly as a stampede of Tauros heads right towards Professor Oak's lab.

Inside the lab, Professor Oak is on the computer typing up something. Tracey comes out carrying a stack of books and sets them on the table. He notices that Professor Oak hasn't eaten his meal yet and Professor Oak sits down and eats. Tracey tells Professor Oak to eat fast because he has to check up on Bulbasaur, Charmander, and Squirtle because a the mayor's son who's name is Gilbert will be coming in today. A doorbell rings and Tracey hands Professor Oak an information sheet. He then goes to answer the door.

The doorbell rings again and Tracey runs through the hallway. Muk appears behind the wall and it starts to follow him. Outside the lab is Mrs. Ketchum and Mr. Mime waiting for someone to answer. Tracey opens the door and says hi when Muk falls over on Tracey. Mrs. Ketchum asks Tracey if he needs any help and Tracey says that he's fine. Inside the lab, Professor Oak is checking the 3 Pokémon's health. He has Bulbsaur open its mouth and he checks it with his flashlight. Mrs. Ketchum comes in and she brings the herbs and she also has heard that Gilbert will be getting his first Pokémon. Tracey asks if they are healthy and the Professor says yes.

They hear a rumbling and the stampede of Tauros smashes the wall. Bulbasaur comes and the 3 starter Pokémon run off because they are scared. Gilbert then comes in and Mrs. Ketchum introduces herself. The mayor's son ignores her and sits down on Professor Oak's chair. He tells them that he wants a Torchic or any other starter Pokémon except for Bulbasaur, Charamander, and Squirtle because they are lame. Bulbasaur makes an angry face. He then goes on telling them on how a kid has a Vigoroth from Hoenn. Tracey tells him that he has no other choice and he has to pick from Bulbasaur, Charmander, or Squirtle. Professor Oak tells him that the 3 Pokémon ran away and Gilbert just laughs. The mayor's son says that he can settle off with a Pikachu and Mrs. Ketchum thinks that he is talking about Ash. Then Gilbert says that he wants a Raichu because he doesn't want to train or evolve a Pikachu. Tracey gets annoyed by this but Professor Oak calms him down. Professor Oak assigns them in groups and they go to find the 3 starter Pokémon.

Meanwhile, an old lady is dusting her shop. She sees Professor Oak and the others. Professor Oak hands Tracey 3 Pokéballs to catch the Pokémon. Tracey takes them and they run off. The old lady comes to them and tells Professor Oak about a magazine. Professor Oak tells her that he'll look at it later and the lady wonders if something is wrong. Professor Oak tells her the story about the missing Pokémon and he tells her not to tell anyone. Professor Oak and Gilbert run off and the lady smiles and runs to her store.

Professor Oak and Gilbert walk up a hill. Gilbert tells Professor Oak that the lady is going to tell everyone about the missing Pokémon and he's right. On the microphone, the lady tells everyone about the 3 missing Pokémon. The lady offers a reward to anyone who can find them.

Meanwhile, Tracey, Mrs. Ketchum, and Mr. Mime are looking for Pokémon in a grassy area. Mr. Mime spots Charmander across the river trying to pick up a scale to a Magikarp. Charmander falls in the water and Tracey goes out to rescue it. Tracey gets the Charmander and goes to carry it back when his head dunks into the water. Mrs. Ketchum tells Mr. Mime to use Psychic to lift them out of the water and it does. Tracey puts the Charmander back into its Pokéball.

Professor Oak and Gilbert are on a ledge. Gilbert looks down and sees that it's a long fall down. Professor Oak tells him not to worry about it. While walking, some rocks fall where Gilbert was standing and he freaks out. Professor Oak thinks that Gilbert isn't ready for his first Pokémon and suggests for him to go home. Gilbert starts to walk away when they hear Squirtle calling for help. They look up and they see Squirtle stuck on a branch. Gilbert walks away and a bunch of rocks falls and so he falls down with it. Gilbert screams and Bulbasaur uses Vine Whip to bring Gilbert back up. Squirtle falls from the branch and Professor Oak catches it. However, Professor Oak has leaned foward too much and starts to fall when Bulbasaur uses Vine Whip to save Professor Oak.

They find a place to sit. Squirtle is in its shell and Bulbasaur is rubbing on Squirtle gently. Gilbert suggests that they leave but Bulbasaur just yells at him. Professor Oak talks to Gilbert about how Squirtle was very scared while Bulbasaur is making animal objects with its vines. Professor Oak goes on how Bulbasaur is loyal and loving and so it cares about Squirtle. Gilbert thinks for a moment and he sees a flashback on how Bulbasaur saved him earlier.

Gilbert gets up and decides to help. He sits next to Bulbasaur and pretends to be the Professor by putting two leaves on his eyebrows. Bulbasaur is freaked out by this but Gilbert continues. Inside the shell is Squirtle who is watching Gilbert make funny faces. Squirtle comes out of its shell and jumps into Gilbert's arms. Gilbert plays with Squirtle and Professor Oak smiles.

The group meets back up together again the town. Tracey says that they have found Charmander and Professor Oak says that they have Squirtle. Suddenly, the lady on the microphone calls for Professor Oak to come to the station. The lady says that Bulbasaur has been causing some trouble by going into people's property. The phone rings and the lady answers it. She hangs up the phone and says that a lady saw a Bulbasaur getting chased by wild Mankeys.

A group of Primeape is seen fighting. It seems that the lady made a mistake by thinking that the Primeape were Mankey. Mrs. Ketchum sees the Bulbasaur stuck on top of the tree. Gilbert decides to take Ash's Bulbasaur and to leave the other one in the tree. The others get annoyed and Gilbert apologizes.

Professor Oak approaches the Primeape. The Primeape stare at Professor Oak and he says to calm down. Professor Oak tells the Primeape that he just wants the Bulbasaur and the Primeape angrily stares at him. Mrs. Ketchum tells Mr. Mime to use Psychic. Mr. Mime uses Psychic to take the Bulbasaur off the tree and to carry it back. Gilbert's nose touches a leaf. He sneezes and Mr. Mime looses control. Bulbasaur falls on one of the Primeape's head. The Primeape are really mad now and they stomp on the ground. Professor Oak and the Bulbasaur get back. The Primeape charge for the group and they run. They go up and down but the Primeape don't give up. They see a fork in the road and they choose to go left. However, one of the Primeape jumps onto Gilbert and he ends up getting split up from the group. Gilbert knocks the Primeape off his back but they continue to follow him. Gilbert looks down and he sees the little Bulbasaur.

Ash's Bulbasaur is with Tracey, Mr. Mime, and Professor Oak. They stop and they notice that Gilbert isn't with them. Gilbert and little Bulbasaur continue to run. They see the edge of the cliff and they stop. The Primeape continue to run towards them and little Bulbasaur is scared. Gilbert gets tough and tells the Primeape to come and get him. The Primeape jump but two other vines knock the Primeape down. The vines came from Ash's Bulbasaur. Ash's Bulbasaur uses its vines to bring Gilbert and the little Bulbasaur to the other side.

The Primeape surrounds Primeape. Bulbasaur uses a Solarbeam attack which amazes Gilbert. The Primeape are now scared and they run away. Back at the lab, Gilbert has chosen Bulbasaur to be his partner. They say goodbye to Gilbert and Gilbert walks off with his new Bulbasaur. Gilbert says goodbye to Ash's Bulbasaur and smiles and then he's off.
