Summary
Ash and friends are still in Fennel Valley awaiting the return of Brandon so Ash can battle him once more. They are also waiting for a special delivery from Professor Oak’s Lab. Professor Oak runs out of the Pokémon Center to where everyone is standing and hands Ash a Pokéball. He calls out his Bulbasaur from it and everyone is happy to see it. Just then, Officer Jenny rides up in her motorcycle, Squirtle riding in the sidecar. Brock goes crazy once again and, once again, Max grabs him by the ear and drags him off. Ash comments that there’s just one more left and Charizard appears out of the sky. He greets Ash and Pikachu with a Flamethrower.

With everyone assembled outside, May calls out her Squirtle and Ash’s uses Water Gun on it to suspend it in the air. May’s returns fire at Ash’s and they are very happy to be together again. Brock hands Ash his backpack for a camping trip, saying that everything is ready. Professor Oak tells everyone that Ash will be spending the night in the wilderness, just like he did the very first night he was on his journey. Nurse Joy hands Ash a box of homemade cookies for his trip. Charizard uses Flamethrower on Ash and his Pokémon one more time and they head out.

In a clearing in the mountains, Ash tells Bulbasaur to use Razor Leaf on a pile of logs, splitting them all in half. Pikachu, Charizard, and Bulbasaur all catch one half of a log, and Squirtle, not paying any attention, gets hit on the head by the half it was supposed to catch. They make a square on the ground with the logs and Ash has Squirtle use Rapid Spin to clear the leaves out of the area. Bulbasaur and Pikachu then use Vine Whip and Quick Attack to gather them and place them in the square of logs to create a comfy place to sleep.

Charizard jumps into the air and lands hard on the leaves, sending them flying everywhere. Squirtle, angry at having to clear them again, sends a Water Gun at Charizard. Squirtle runs and Bulbasaur gets blasted by Charizard’s retaliatory Flamethrower. Bulbasaur uses Razor Leaf and hits Pikachu after Charizard dodges it. Pikachu uses Iron Tail and hits Charizard who fires another Flamethrower which hits Ash after he steps in to stop them. Pikachu ends the fight with a Thunderbolt that hits everyone.

With a new set of leaves collected, Ash and the Pokémon set out to get some food. They discover a berry tree and, before Ash can say anything, Charizard flies into the air for it. Its wings glow in a Steel Wing attack and it knocks two large groups of berries off the tree. Pikachu and Bulbasaur collect them with Vine Whip and Quick Attack and Squirtle uses Water Gun to grab some. They soon have a giant pile of berries. As the sun sets in the mountains, Ash has Charizard use Flamethrower on a pile of rocks and sticks. It doesn’t light them but ends up scorching them. Charizard tries again with just a tiny ball of flame and it lights.

As the group sits around the fire that night, Ash thinks back to where he met all of them and how they changed; Pikachu was his starter and didn’t listen to anything he said until Ash protected it from the Spearow flock; Bulbasaur was protecting the Hidden Village and became Ambassador of Professor Oak’s Lab; Charizard was an abandoned Charmander which soon evolved under Ash’s care; and Squirtle was a member of the Squirtle Squad, which was transformed into the Squirtle Fire Squad.

Ash and his Pokémon continue to train in the mountains for several days; while they sleep one night, Team Rocket spies on them and decides to steal Pikachu one more time. And so they drive up in a noodle truck and offer Ash some noodles. He accepts but Jessie says that the noodle-making battery is gone and they’d need an electric Pokémon to power it. Ash hands over Pikachu and they jump in the truck and drive off. They then proceed to fly off in a metal Meowth balloon. Ash, Bulbasaur, and Squirtle mount Charizard and give chase. Ash tells Bulbasaur to use Razor Leaf, but it does nothing.

Ash then commands Charizard to use Flamethrower which heats up the metal. Squirtle uses Water Gun on the same spot but it does nothing. Ash tells them to speed up and they eventually make a crack in the balloon. Bulbasaur sends them to the ground with a Razor Leaf and Pikachu jumps back to Ash. On the ground, Pikachu uses Thunderbolt, Squirtle uses Water Gun, Bulbasaur uses Razor Leaf, and Charizard sends them blasting off again with a Flamethrower.

Charizard hears a rustling sound from the bushes and Brandon steps out, complimenting Ash on his battle against Team Rocket. He says that he found the Pokémon he was looking for and came back immediately to take Ash up on his request of a rematch. Brandon requests that the battle be 4-on-4 and Ash accepts.

And so they head back to the Pokémon Center. Scott mentions that Ash could now have a chance at becoming a Frontier Brain and the gang heads inside for an explanation. He says that any trainer who conquers the Battle Frontier is given the opportunity to become a Frontier Brain, in charge of their own Battle Facility and if Ash wins against Brandon, he’ll have that chance. Professor Oak and Max recite a poem and the battle time arrives.

At the Pyramid, the top opens up giving Charizard and any flying Pokémon that Brandon may have the advantage of the skies. Ash sends out Charizard first and Brandon releases a Dusclops which may promptly looks up in her Pokédex. Charizard starts with a Flamethrower which Dusclops blocks with Will-O-Wisp. Charizard uses Steel Wing but Dusclops uses Shadow Punch and makes a clean hit on Charizard. Next, Charizard uses Dragonbreath and gets a direct hit in on Dusclops. Brandon calls for a Mean Look attack and Professor Oak explains to Max and May that now Charizard cannot leave the arena.

On Charizard’s next attempt of a Steel Wing, Dusclops latches on and uses Confuse Ray, making Charizard go completely crazy. It lands on the ground and Ash attempts to recall it, thinking that he can combat the confusion by calling it into its Pokéball, but Mean Look prevents Charizard from leaving the arena until it is knocked out or has won the match. Dusclops next uses a Shadow Punch, sending Charizard into the wall. Charizard is then hit with a Will-O-Wisp and is suspended in the air by the blue flames. Ash calls to Charizard and encourages it to break free of the confusion and that it has helped on so many different occasions. Charizard closes its eyes and opens them again, ready to fight and no longer confused.

Charizard uses Dragonbreath which hits Dusclops head-on. Dusclops fires back with a Will-O-Wisp and Charizard lands on the ground. Both Pokémon are tired out but the battle continues. Charizard uses Steel Wing once more and Dusclops latches on again. Ash calls for a Seismic Toss and Charizard dives for the ground. Before Charizard can let go however, Dusclops disappears and Professor Oak tells Ash that Normal attacks have no effect on Ghost Pokémon. Brandon calls Checkmate and knocks Charizard out with a final Shadow Punch. With one Pokémon down, Ash is already losing. Can he win against Brandon? Stay tuned to find out!

English Official Summary

At the Fennel Valley Pokémon Center, Ash gets a special delivery from Oak's Lab—his Bulbasaur. Officer Jenny soon arrives with his Squirtle, and his Charizard flies in too. Ash is going on a retreat with these three Pokémon and Pikachu to train for his upcoming rematch with Brandon. Out in the forest, the four Pokémon work together to build a bed to sleep on, but Charizard hogs it at first and starts a fight. Eventually they calm down and rebuild the bed, get some food, and even practice their moves. That night Charizard lights a campfire, and Ash remembers how he met Pikachu, Charizard, Squirtle, and Bulbasaur. Team Rocket happens to be watching, and they drive up in a noodle truck in which they manage to grab Pikachu. The truck releases a metal balloon that they then escape in. Ash takes to the air on Charizard, and has his Pokémon perform various attacks on the balloon to no avail. Eventually Charizard and Squirtle alternate their attacks, causing the balloon to crack so Bulbasaur can break it open. The four Pokémon then team up their attacks to send Team Rocket blasting off. Brandon emerges from the bushes nearby to tell Ash it's time to battle, and that they should make it a 4-on-4 battle with his four Pokémon. Back at the Pokémon Center, Scott lets Ash know that he could be a Frontier Brain if he beats Brandon, but Ash is more worried about winning first. At the Battle Pyramid, the battle begins with Charizard versus Brandon's Dusclops. Dusclops traps Charizard in battle with the move Mean Look, and then uses Confuse Ray to confuse it. Eventually Charizard snaps out of its confusion. Ash makes a fatal error by having Charizard use Seismic Toss, which has no effect on Ghost-types like Dusclops. Dusclops performs Shadow Punch, knocking Charizard out.

Satoshi identifies the Pokémon that he's sending out before it comes out of the monster ball. Ash doesn't let people know which Pokémon it is ahead of time.

Ash: Come on out!
Satoshi: All right. Come out, Fushigidane!

How Brock and Takeshi are 'arrested' by Jenny is different between the Japanese original and English dub. Takeshi says Junsa has arrested his heart meaning that he's fallen in love with her while Brock says he's going to arrest himself so he can spend more time with her.

Brock: Jenny, you stole my heart! And now I'll have to make a citizens arrest for love-larceny.
Takeshi: My beloved Junsa-san! You've already arrested my heart!
(タケシ): 愛しのジュンサーさん!自分のハートはもう貴方に逮捕されました!
02:19

Script Error

Haruka says nothing about the size differences between her and Satoshi's Zenigame like May does in the English dub.

May: Wow! You sure are a lot bigger than my Squirtle.
Haruka: I guess it's the first time I've met your Zenigame, Satoshi.
(サトシ): サトシのゼニガメに会うのは初めてかも。
02:59

Script Error

The English dub removed the famous Japanese proverb that fits well with the situation.

Jenny: It's a worthwhile thing to do from time to time.
Junsa: Like they say, "Never forget your beginner's heart".
(ジュンサー): 「初心忘るべからず」ってわけね。

Culture Reference

During the flashback scenes in the Japanese original, Battle Frontier (Ballad Version) is played. The English dub puts their own new song in during the flashback scenes. The English dub DVD for this episode does not give any credit for the singer or the name of the song. The closed captions also do not transcribe the lyrics.

Jen Scaturro is the artist of the song and the song's name is "Go On". She is an independent song writer that licenses her music out.

Go On - Jen Scaturro

Will you play me a song
'Cus I think it's been too long
I want to hear what you think
About everything that's happening

Oh, oh, oh! Go on, go on. Oh, go on.

I want to hear what you've got
'Cus I know it hits the spot
Can we hang on the end of everything,
Of everything we said.

Oh, oh, oh! Go on, Oh, go on, go on.

Team Rocket's dialog is heavily modified and breaks the 4th wall as they recognize that the current season of the show is about to end.

Character English Translation Japanese
Jessie We've waited for 9 seasons. Even if you say, "Ah, wait!"... 「あっ、待て」と言われても・・・
James I'de say that's paying our dues. ...we will definitely not wait. That's how we are! ・・・決して待たないのが俺達さ!
Team Rocket And now you lose! *No Dialog* *No Dialog*
Ash Hey you're Team Rocket! You're the Rocket Gang! お前らはロケット団!
Meowth And we'll still be through season 10! Bingo, you're right! ピンポーン!はいそのとおり!
Team Rocket We've still got it! Bye! 帰る!

10:06

Script Error

Meowth in the English dub said that Team Rocket used was Lead. Rocket Gang in the Japanese original just says they used steel.

Meowth: This is one of those crazy times when flying in a lead balloon ends up being a good thing!
Nyarth: This time, our balloon is a special version laced with steel!
(ニャース): 今回の気球は鋼を織り込んだスペシャルバージョンなのニャ!

Script Error

Jessie calls Ash dumb but then Meowth says Ash isn't that dumb. James assumes Meowth believes they are the dumb ones. Nyarth in the Japanese original just says they could be in trouble.

Character English Translation Japanese
Jessie Either they have too much time on their hands or they're plain dumb! Didn't we tell you that neither heat nor the cold will affect it? 熱いのも冷たいのも平気だって言ってんでしょうが!
Meowth Hey guys, I don't think those dopes are as dopey as they look... Nah, if they're used in turns, we'll be in trouble. いや、それを交互にやられると不味いのニャ・・・
James Are you saying that we are? What? Could it be...? えぇ ?! じゃあまさか・・・

11:20

Script Error

Team Rocket's dialog is changed again to talk about cracked heads this time and just more insults. Nyarth in the Japanese original thought he was going to die.

Character English Translation Japanese
Jessie Your head is cracked too! What was that, Nyarth?! 何なのよ、ニャース!
Meowth Better cracked than fat! I thought we were going to die. 死ぬかと思ったニャ・・・
James Your head is perfect, right? Manene, are you all right? マネネ、大丈夫か?

Oak's poem is a bit different than the Japanese original but it tries to incorporate the Snorlax. Okido generally does a senryu as part of his segment at the end of each episode and his final line is "Everyone, get Pokémon!". Masato's reasoning for saying the line is to finish off Okido's poem with that line just like Okido does at the end of his segment. Max's reasoning isn't the same as Masato's as Max wanted to finish off an Oak poem not say the famous last like that Okido says.

Character English Translation Japanese
Okido Overconfidence can be like waking a Snorlax you see. Don't let your guard down. Win and fasten the cord on Kabigon. 油断は禁物。勝ってカビゴンの緒を締めよ。
Masato I'd sure like a Pokémon for me! Everyone, get Pokémon! みんなもポケモンゲットじゃぞ!

Eyecatch Pre-episode Message

In order to alert the viewers that the episode is about to start, a special eyecatch was used. The eyecatch is a countdown towards the beginning of the episode and contains scenes from previous AG openings, Advance Adventure and Pokémon Symphonic Medley. The split-screen scenes with Haruka and Takeshi were updated versions of the Advance Adventure ones that reflected the changes in the characters' Pokémon teams. More specifically, the scene that depicted Takeshi's Mizugorou and Takeshi's Hassboh was replaced with a scene from Takeshi's Numacraw's battle against Satoshi's Juptile that took place in AG149, while the scene that depicted Haruka's Achamo and Haruka's Agehunt was replaced with a scene from Haruka's Gonbe's battle against Shiromi's Rafflesia that took place in AG151. The countdown ends with Satoshi reciting his catchphrase, "Get Pokémon!" (ポケモンゲットだぜ!, Pokémon getto da ze! ).

Special First-Airing Segment Diamond and Pearl Full-Force Scoop

In this installment of the "Diamond & Pearl Full-Force Scoop", the (unofficial) Diamond & Pearl Campaign Boys, Robert, introduce more clips from the upcoming "Diamond" and "Pearl" games.

The games are set in the lush "Sinnoh Region", where one "professor Nanakamado" is the local Pokémon researcher. The first Pokémon you'll meet in the games will be the three Pokémon he'll give you.

As you journey through the region, a mysterious organization called the "Galaxy Gang" will be getting in your way - exactly what their plans are is unknown, but they're without doubt up to nothing good.

In addition to the addition of new characters and Pokémon, Pokémon battles and contests will be improved as well, and we are shown some clips of how they'll look in these games.

Baba ends the segment by saying the games will be out Thursday September 28th, and Akiyama says that's in another 35 days, so you should go swim in the sea until then. Yamamoto tells him you'd swell up for sure if you did that.

I actually found the Team Rocket lines in this episode more annoying than funny. They tried to make the few lines that they couldn't translate to English for culture reasons funny and it didn't work. The insults just ended up being more Three Stooges than Team Rocket.

Tracks at 1:15, 5:35 still need to be added. 1:15 is from Movie 3 and 5:35 is from the second Pikachu short and are both unreleased BGM tracks.

I loved to have Satoshi's 3 first starters back in this episode... though it really is a pity Lizardon got defeated in such a noobish way (trying to use a Fight attack on a Ghost-type Pokémon... really now Satoshi, we aren't in Unova yet, are we?). Still, it was an interesting episode, and quite a nice way to end the Battle Frontier arc.
