Conway's first appearance was during the tag-team competition as Dawn's partner. He later managed to get 8 badges in order to enter the Sinnoh League. In the third battling round, Conway battled against Ash. He proved to be a formidable opponent for Ash, but Ash's Gible was able to defeat two of Conway's Pokémon to give Ash the victory and allow him to advance the next round against Paul.
