AZ is a man who was born almost 3,000 years ago.

Prior to the events of Pokémon X and Y, he was the king of the Kalos region during a fierce war between two nations. Because these nations believed powerful Pokémon were needed to win the war, they drafted AZ's partner, Floette, and forced it out to war without his permission. His Floette died, and the body was returned to him. In grief, and wanting to see his Floette again, AZ created "The Ultimate Weapon". This weapon worked like Yveltal, it drained a lot of life energy to bring back one life. It killed many people and Pokémon and ultimately ended the war. His Floette, brought back to life, was so disgusted by the sacrifice it took to bring her back, and left him. Because of the Ultimate Weapon's power, both his Floette and him have been cursed with immortality. He carried the key of the Ultimate Weapon on a necklace to remind him of the pain and suffering he caused, forced to walk the Earth to atone for their sins.

During the events of Pokémon X and Y, he is taken prisoner by Lysandre, who aimed to create The Ultimate Weapon once more. Despite AZ trying to warn him not to make the same mistake he once did, the key around AZ's neck was taken off of him. Lysandre almost had the chance to shoot the Ultimate Weapon before the player character, Calem or Serena, along with Shauna, Tierno, and Trevor, stop Lysandre's evil plans. This inspires AZ, who approaches Calem or Serena during their Hall of Fame ceremony and challenges them to a battle. The opening of his heart convinced Floette his sins had been atoned to, and returned to AZ in the sunset.

In Pokemon Legends Z-A, reunited, an older AZ and his Floette run the Hotel Z in Lumiose City.
