Bugsy's Metapod was the second Pokémon used by Bugsy in the Azalea Town Gym Battle against Ash Ketchum. It's opponent was Ash's Chikorita, who started the battle with Vine Whip. Metapod countered with Harden, forcing Ash's Chikorita to try a Razor Leaf attack. However, Metapod's defenses were too strong and thus rendered Ash's Chikorita's attacks useless. After a second attempt at Razor Leaf, Metapod dodged and hit Ash's Chikorita with Tackle, defeating it in the process.

Metapod's second opponent was Ash's Pikachu. Metapod started the battle with a Tackle attack, but Pikachu was able to dodge. Metapod used its speed to try and fool Ash's Pikachu , but Ash's Pikachu was even faster and was able to dodge Metapod's attacks and jump onto it. While holding on to Metapod, Ash's Pikachu was able to hit a close range Thunderbolt and defeat Metapod.
