Ash Ketchum met Karena who runs a Pokémon Day Care near Shippo City where she watches over Pokémon eggs. As thanks for helping out her granddaughter Daniela sort out her kindergarten class, she gave Ash Ketchum a Pokémon egg. Karena told Ash Ketchum to raise it well so that it would be a great Pokémon. That Pokémon egg later hatched into Ash's Scraggy while Ash Ketchum was en-route to Castelia City.

While resting, Iris' Axew noticed that the egg was beginning to glow but got too excited and caused the egg to fall down the nearby cliff and almost get smashed by a rock. Thankfully, Ash's Pikachu's Quick Attack was fast enough to rescue the egg in time. After hatching, Ash's Scraggy's initial attitude was very overbearing as Pikachu attempted to greet it but it used headbutt on Ash's Pikachu. Ash Ketchum then sent out his other Pokémon but Ash's Scraggy ended up fighting them as well. Ash Ketchum tried to capture it after battling his other Pokémon but it refused to be caught by him at that time.

After its encounter with a group of Dentula, Ash Ketchum's other Pokémon came to Ash's Scraggy rescue as it was greatly over matched. Ash Ketchum could tell that it was beginning to trust him. Cilan then suggested that Ash's Scraggy battle Iris' Axew as all the other Pokémon were too strong. Both Pokémon agreed but they ended up knocking each other out at the same time. Ash's Scraggy was finally caught after the battle as it had grown to like Ash Ketchum.

Learning Hi Jump Kick

Iris' Axew was captured by a Zuruzukin and wanted a Pokémon willing to battle together with it. Nyagotiator Nyarth decided that Ash's Scraggy would be a good distraction and asked the Zuruzukin to teach Ash's Scraggy a new move. Zuruzukin showed Ash's Scraggy Hi Jump Kick which it began practicing as a distraction while Ash's Snivy rescued Iris' Axew. It quickly mastered the attack thanks to Zuruzukin's instructions by using the attack on the Vulgina that stole Zuruzukin's lair.

First Gym Battle against Brycen

Ash's Scraggy was then sent out for its first gym battle. It started off by hurting its knee when it missed with its Hi Jump Kick but it was able to surprise Brycen by defending itself against attacks by pulling up its skin to protect itself. From that point on Ash's Scraggy dominated the battle and was able to finish off Brycen's Vanillish with an effective Headbutt.

After Ash's Scraggy defeated Brycen's Vanillish, Brycen's Cryogonal was sent out to battle. Ash's Scraggy wasn't able to defend itself against Brycen's Cryogonal's very fast and accurate Rapid Spin. It also made it hard for Ash's Scraggy to attack it. Ash's Scraggy ended up getting knocked out by Aurora Beam.

Isshu League Tournament

Ash's Scraggy participated in the second main round of the Isshu League tournament where it faced off against a Darumakka. It was able to defeat it so that Satoshi moved on to the next round.
