Benny was finishing his last minute preparations for the Leaf Town Pokémon trade meet when he met Ash Ketchum and his friends. Benny told them about the huge festival here Leaf Town and also the trade meet for Pokémon. Benny explained to them that he loved his Wobbuffet but he wanted to know what it was like to raise different kinds of Pokémon.

After seeing Ash's Tauros win against Fernando's Tauros, Benny thought he should try and trade his Wobbuffet for Ash's Tauros but Ash Ketchum insisted he wasn't trading it. Benny then tried to trade for a Scyther but after the trainer saw Benny's Wobbuffet, he outright refused. Benny was a bit depressed that he couldn't trade his Wobbuffet but he showed his optimistic side by telling his Wobbuffet that it was still a great Pokémon. Kasumi then said that she and her friends would help Benny find someone to trade his Wobbuffet with. Benny was very grateful for the assistance as he had worked hard to prepare for the trade meet but no one was taking him seriously.

Jessie landed near the official trade station after James and the Magikarp Salesman came running through. Benny wanted to trade his Wobbuffet for a stronger Pokémon but Jessie accidentally traded her Lickitung for Benny's Wobbuffet after her Poké ball fell out of her pocket and onto the machine and she picked up the wrong Poké ball.

Ash Ketchum and his friends weren't able to realize that the girl Benny traded his Wobbuffet was Jessie despite having just battled her. Benny wanted to find her and offer her his gratitude for trading and to make sure she took good care of Wobbuffet.
