Water Day (水の日) and Water Week (水の週間) were established by the Japanese government in 1977 to raise public awareness and understanding of the importance of water and water resource development. Water Day is the first day of August, when water consumption is highest throughout the year and usage of water rises. The first week of August is designated as Water Week, during which various water-related educational events are held every year.
During Water Day and Water Week, national and local governments, businesses, and private organizations work together to conduct awareness-raising activities nationwide every year about the importance of water.
In July 2021, the Minister of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism appointed Pokémon's Showers as a Water Day Ambassador. Showers has been working to raise awareness of Water Day through a variety of activities, including appearances in Water Day PR videos.
This year, Miss Water Japan 2024 Minami Yasui (安井南) will be promoting Water Day along with Water Day Ambassador Showers.
